I think i've narrowed my decision down to these two rifles... I would like to do as little work as possible to make the rifle an accurate gun with a light trigger and no jamming issues... I know the 10/22 can be modded into anything i can think of but my budget is $300-400 so which rifle would be the better choice?

what rifle do you suggest?

what mods do you suggest I do to the rifle?

and please dont mention the 10/22 just because you own one...

I would go with a 597 if you are not wanting to do a lot of mods, accurate right out of the box and with the Volquartsen Target Hammer or just a good polish job of the factory one you will have a great trigger pull. Just my 2 cents and by the way i own both a 10-22 as well as 3 597's

If you do a search in the rimfire section you'll find this has been discussed plenty of times before.
Ya, for the money go for the 597 plus VQ hammer.

I would have to agree with the general trend here. Get the Remington. I know that the Rugers have cult like followings, but I have had a number of 10/22's and I bought a 597 a few years ago that would outshoot them all.

Marlin

I really liked my marlin 795, It was ultra accurate way better than all my rifles at the time, had a decent trigger pull and large release tabs for mag and bolt.
It is a very light weight rifle that had a great ballance with a scope. With your budget you should be able to get one with a bushnell banner 4-12 A/0 and a couple extra magazines. As for jamablilty i had very few issues or ftfs.

As for the status of my 22 i now own a 10/22 its a mannlicher International stock with handguard, I like the 25 round mags with the loader. Plus all the options afterwards. I got mine more or less pre modded internally, you can see a pic of it below my signature line. I think 10/22s are ugly as sin with the original plain factory stock. But when i saw the international i just had to get it.

No doubt you may end up with one some day too..

PS the 10/22 is better if you ever want to upgrade it in the future and nothing can stop that wonderful rotary magazine except mabey crappy winchester bulk ammo from Wmart.

10/22: Pros: better to mod, you can get an excellent accurate barrel and put it on yourself but that's another $200. Also the rotary mags are an excellent design.

With the 10/22 you can make it whatever you want. Want an "ultimate"? No problem. A hunting rig? it's there. How about a hunting rig with an aftermarket bench accurate barrel? yup you can turn it into one.

The 597: Pros: cheaper, some parts seem better (the stock barrels) compared to the 10/22.

The only real problem with the 597 are the possible reliability issues (as posted online) and the lack of mods. If your barrel is crap it won't be an easy fix with lots of options.

I recently bought a 597 TVP. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but the overall quality does seem to be on par and in some areas better than that of the 10/22 target models.

It's a tough choice. I took the easy way out :D. I bought both. In fact I also bought a R55 Benchmark. :p
I'll be putting the same scope on all three and running them through their paces in a few months.

thanks guys, that cleared things up for me but i'll also look into that marlin 795 ianc suggested

and that r55 was going to be my going to be my first choice until I saw the price of that rifle... i figure i could fix up a remmy or 10/22 so that it can shoot nearly as good but for a fraction of the cost

The thing with the R55 is the old world charm. It feels like a rifle that was built about 50 years ago. Before aluminum alloys and composites made up the bulk of a rifle. It's the type of rifle that appeals to someone who wants something that's very accurate right out of the box (Some reports have put many of them on the same accuracy level as higher end bolt guns, This could just be internet talk though). This is also the rifle for the person who wants a semi auto, but predominately has Annies, coopers, Kimber, Remington target bolts actions etc. They're the ones these rifles are aimed at. The kids will overlook this rifle. The guys who have the above guns will recognize what it is.

That being said there are a few quality parts that I prefer on my 597 TVP. I like the engraved Remington logo on the heel of the pistol grip, VS the plastic T/C cap on the R-55. I also like the rubber recoil pad. While not necessary it is a nice touch. The one on the R55 is plastic. It's a shame. Because those are the only two flaws I could find with the R55.

I should also add that both the 597 and R55 have last shot bolt hold open mechanisms. The lack of this on the 10/22 is probably it's biggest short coming.

If it's a one or the other choice (You're only fooling yourself if you think you'll only be getting one :D). Then I'd also have to say the 597 is better bang for the buck. Plus with it's popularity I'm sure there will be a lot of mods for them in the near future.

Until I shoot it and check out reliability/accuracy compared to my 10/22 target I can only state my general observations and the pros/cons that are on paper. If mine is a jam-o-matic (I have read the stickies, I'll loosen the guide rods before trying it out) or broad side of the barn accurate then the 10/22 will be a much better deal.

On paper the 597 target (get a bull barrel, it might be a while before you change out barrels) is the better buy.

I got 597, neat little rifle shoots well, I put a scope on it and shoot it to 75 yards :), at times hold-over to 100 yards

the rifle had 2 cleanings for about 3000 rounds, all this year
ps. I'm practicing with .22 for wind doping

I think if you are choosing 597 over 1022 its better to get one with heavy barrel and laminate stock. I think it is still within your budget and costs almost as much as plain-jane 1022. There are people who would disagree on difference heavy barrel makes but take my word and get heavy barrel model. TVP is probably the best choice out of all 597's but it exceeds your budget.

My Dad has a TVP and it is a very nice rifle. My only complaint is that it doesn't like the bulk pack ammo... very finicky and only likes the high velocity, expensive stuff.
My plain jane 597 shoots very tight groups with the Federal bulk pack ammo which is dirt cheap--- that's the way to go IMO.

My GF bought me a 597 LSHB last year for Xmas and I absolutly love it. After doing the hammer, and figuring the crappy original mag design out, it will burn through two 30 round mags(25 loaded in each) as fast as I can pull the trigger.

The plan:
These scopes will be mounted soon. :D

My TVP is a very nice rifle .. shoots very well also. Just picked up a T/C all weather .. it OOOZES quality. Haven't shot it yet, but most say it is very accurate as well. If you want a quality built rifle .. the T/C is the way to go.

My 597 outshoots almost all stock 10/22 regular barrell everytime.

But i must say of you get a 10/22 with the Forge Hammer barrell, then its the same.

As for feeding reliability, if you adjust the 2 rods properly on thr 507, its great
