6-48 Tap set

For odd ball taps and dies I'd like to recommend TRACY Tools in the UK
I have used them for years and I do mean years.
I can order on the internet Sunday night, pay with VISA and I have had it on wed ..the SAME WEEK
I usually allow till the weekend and the odd time it does go into the next week but that is Kanada Post and not the UK side of it

Thanks for all the good information. I'm installing a Wilson Combat adjustable rear sight on a stainless steel Colt slide. Machining was easily completed in couple of hours. Installation requires 8-32 and 6-48 thread cuts. I had a plug 8-32 tap which broke rather quickly to my disappointment. Had to break it out, it was rather very resistive cutting threads. I also had a 6-48 plug type tap and that didn't even proceed very well, so I thought I get some taper taps to start threads and finish with a bottom tap.

I've looked at most, if not all, sources mentioned above, nobody had all the taps I'm looking for. I placed an order from McMaster but they canceled the order, saying they no longer ship to private customers. While looking around Brownells updated their stock so ended up ordering from them.

Thanks again for all the info...

Man if i was home i could send you the sizes you want. If you can find the CGN user B_noser PM him and ask if he will sell you some taps in those sizes. ( i gave him 15 pounds or so of taps in those sizes in a trade a few years ago)

Since Evan brought it up - yes, I did get quite the pile of taps from him in a trade, but there were no #6 x 48s in the mix. I bought the 6 x 48s I do have from Brownell's and I really don't have any to spare. In case it has not been mentioned already, a tap can be reground to either taper, plug or bottoming profile. Just don't forget to grind in a bit of relief. Save those broken taps and regrind them if not too short.

Yes, I did grind the broken one, but still wasn't cutting as it should so I decided to put a break and get better quality taps...

I've converted many taper taps into bottom taps in the past...

I thought they had a bit of a selection but that is all that I could find today.

They've got low quality taps, for the most part. Chinese quality meant for mild steel or softer only.

If you're tapping a receiver ring, especially on a 91-98 Mauser, they will dull and break very easily, no matter how much cutting fluid you use.

Brownelles or an offshore provider.

I really like the taps from Tracy Tools.com out of the UK, who have just about anything you want at reasonable prices and the quality is superb.

The stuff from Tracy Tools gets through customs much faster.

Best taps I've ever used were Emuge (sp ?), German I believe. Bought them from Thomas Skinner. I prefer Spiral Flute type, chips roll out the top in a spiral, no need to reverse the tap to break chips.
Rather expensive but they will tap many, many holes and are really tough. Worth the investment when you're working on expensive parts.

A #6 tap is going to be pretty hard to break, if I'm honest. Make sure it's drilled to the right dia, chamfer it 0.01 above the OD and use a spring center if you are able to. You only need a plug tap if you can only get one, but taper will be slightly easier.

I work with Stainless 316 and Gr3/5 Ti at work, so the mild steel in receivers is like butter to me.

Me thinks you have never drilled/tapped the ring of a P 14-17.

A lot of 98 and other military receivers are as hard as some of the P 14/17

I recently had a lovely M1935 Oberndorf crack almost all the way accross the top of the ring, when I was trying to remove it with an internal style wrench.

I turned out to be glass hard. It dulled the sharp tip of a supertanium center punch.

Modern bolt action receivers are much easier to drill and tap
