I am thinking of rebarreling my rem 700 in either 6.5-06 AI or 280 AI. I want a rifle that has good accuracy and can take large game (elk, moose, etc.). I don't really care about making the brass, just concerned about take down power. Are the 6.5 big enough for elk and moose?? This is the only thing that is holding me up on my decision. I really want a 6.5 calibar.

The swedes have been killing their moose with the 6.5x55 for over 100 years.

unless your local moose where body armour, a 260Rem, a 6.5x55 or a 708 are all you need. the 6.5 130gr to 160gr hunting bullets have fantastic penetration.

My 6.5x55 loaded with 160gr Hornady round nose leaves a good sized exit hole on moose.

Consider the reg. 6.5-06 or 280 Rem for best feeding. The difference in potential velocity isn't worth the headache of a poor feeding rifle.

Either will dead'em just fine.

Although it is slight, the 280Rem does have heavier bullets.

I doubt any moose in the world could tell a 6.5-06 from a 270. Advantage for a hunting rifle to buy ammo at canadian tire or borrow from a buddy in a pinch.

if you really want to do a project, just for the fun and pride of doing it, the 280AI has the advantage of a seletion of heavier bullets and, in an emergency, you could buy and hunt factory ammo.

6.5 or 280

My buddy has a 6.5 AI I have a 280 AI.
Both are good but if you want to get the most out of the 6.5 you have to shoot berger bullets or other target style bullets.
where as the 280 AI has higher B.C's with hunting style bullets.
