A rifle that i've always wanted has just been announced in 6.5/06. I know what this cartridge is about balistically but I wanted to ask if there are any tricks to loading it? As it is a 30/06 necked down, it shouldn't have any issues? Is the A-square version any diffent than just necking the '06?

I believe that the A-Square version is just a SAAMI-fied version. Legitimized it so to speak. Neck 25-06 up to 6.5 instead of down from 30 cal. Less brass stress.

I have a Winchester Post 64 M 70 rifle rebarrelled for the 6.5 -06. I hunt with a tikka M 658 Master Trapper and handload the 6.5 *55 so I have yet to shoot the Model 70. I prepared some brass from 06' and 270 brass. Watch the overall trim to brass length with the 270. I use Hornady dies and will have to get around to shooting this rifle. Wildcat fun for certain. Regards. Fascinating to read up un the Newton rifles let alone calibres chambered. He was responsible for the Savage 22 Highpower and the 250 savage as well as the Newton rifle offerings. Way ahead of his time that fellow.

For those not up to speed, what are the ballistic differences between this and say the 6.5x55? longer range? flatter trajectory? faster projectiles? quicker barrel wear?

thanks

6.5 bullets are really fussy about twist rates. I have one 6.5-06 built on a Remington action with a 1-10 twist and a deep throat. It doesn't like anything over 129grns.

The other one is on a Win Mod 70, with a 1-9 twist and it will just stabilise 140grns.

The Coopers I've seen and shot were darn nice rifles. If the twist rates are 1-9 or less, it should be a decent all around rifle.
