I would throw away a 264 Win Mag if 3000 fps was all you could get with a 139/140 grain bullet. Any decent 264 with a 24" or longer barrel will give 3150 - 3250 fps without excessive pressures. 3000 is a realistic max for the 6.5-06 using a 26" barrel. Expect about 50 - 60 fps less with the 24" tube. Eagleye.
 
I went with Shilen's recommendation of 1-8 for 130 gr and up .

Im trying to keep the whole package fairly light so its going to be a SS featherweight contour 22" pipe . I was just reading the Nosler manual....pretty good numbers with the 130 gr. Accubond..:cool:

You should really try to strech the barrel length to 24" IMO.

I cant get the featherweigh barrel in 24" - 50 fps dont' matter much for me either way, I like a 22" in a hunting rifle and I dont' need to shoot over many beanfields here in the NorthEast.
 
Pathfinder I strongly recommend the 24. Get the barrell fluted or something to save weight. The 22 inch barrel will make it very fussy to reload for.

Charlie Sisk did a number of velocity tests on barrels by cutting an inch off at a time. The velocity losses were much less than 25 f/s given. Looking at the data,the question was raised," Why do we have barrels longer than 21" ?" Go with the 22".
 
If you use usual powder/bullet comb. for the 6.5/06 you will notice more muzzle flash with the 22" and may have trouble finding suitable load. That and featherweight barrels not being the most accurate would have me getting a 26 and using the various lightening methods. 22" barrels are fine for underbore cart. but not overbore ones. If you want a 22" you may be better with a 260. My opinion only, but I shoot 4 rifles like this, 1 6.5 Gibbs and 3 in 6.5/06 and have for awhile. Mark

I know what what you mean about overbore cartridges and short barrels,

I have a Ruger compact in 243 (16.5" barrel) that is not the easiest to load for.

Its probably too late for me to make changes to this project at this point but Ill try to report back to this thread in either case.
 
Since short barrels are more stiff,they should be more accurate.

Muzzle flash varies powders,N-560 used in my 30-06 hunting load always wows them at the range.
 
Nothing to do with stiff, rather unburnt powder causes erratic vel. There is a reason you don't see many 22" barrels on rifles chambered for long range cart. Mark

I noticed this winter that my wife's 243 (16.5" barrel) had velocities all over the map but Im not sure if that' because of the powder's temperature stability (lack thereof). (RL-22)

I always thought that the powder would burn in the first inches.....if unburned by the 22" inch....maybe I need to check if Im using charcoal for a propellant :D
 
Just an update, Im pushing 130's at about 3000 fps so far, I thought I might get 3100 fps but I guess not. Still playing around but Ill probably be using that load for Deer hunting this year. Went up to 57.5 gr. of RL-25 behind 130gr. Matrix FB's . Accuracy is around MOA but It needs a good cleaning now. will also test SST's and Accubonds I have laying around.
