Hello everyone I am building a tactical long range rifle in 6.5-284 Norma and have a few questions. First of all I plan on shooting 140 grain bullets and was thinking a 1-8 twist should be a good choice. Correct? Next what length of barrel should I get? I was thinking 26 inch but would a 28 or even 30 inch barrel give me enough extra velocity to be worth it? Also anyone have any opinions on what brand of barrels they have had good/bad experiences with (I currently only have a Pac-Nor barrel on one of my rifles, Very impressed).

Thank you in advanced!!

TJ.

I have a bob jury custom barrel in 6.5-284 it's a 1-9 to 1-7.5 gain twist, I had it made for shooting Berger 140 bullets, mine is 26". I think it's the perfect set up for that chambering.

I shoot a 6.5-06 which is practically identical in velocity. I have a Ron Smith 8.5 gain twist barrel and it shoots the 140`s great. I`m at just under 3000 fps using H-1000 in a 24 inch tube. I guess it depends on what you want to use it for but I wouldnt want a 28 inch for hunting and if you run the numbers the extra 100 fps or so for the 4 inches doesnt get you much really.
That 140 berger is great for long range plinking though, the ballistics are almost the same as the 168 7mm`s without much recoil.

it is a cartridge notoriously bad on barrels with 1000 accurate rounds being considered average. I've had them go long before that. Its your dime, but at almost triple the barrel life, virtually equal performance and variety of components, why not a .260??

the 6.5-284 wears throats so fast you need to change seating depth every 50-100 rounds to keep up with the lands

This is not true. I have just over 200 rounds out of my 6.5-284. I have monitored the throat closely and have not seen any notable wear.
If the barrel is not overheated and a proper cleaning regimen is used the barrel will last as long as a 7mm REM mag or similar cartridge.

My has 1400 rds and still grouping under moa at 700y. Shooting 139gr Lapua Scenar and I have only adjusted the seating depth once.
8" twist is pretty standard for 140gr. If you are using it for plinking, go with the 30" barrel doesn't cost that much more and it gives you an option to set back the throat later when its burns out.
