I've seen a few posts in EE for a 6.5 Extreme starter kit. No real information, just wondering what is Extreme and what kind of feedback this round is getting. I recently had opportunity to try shooting out past the 1000m mark and am now in the planning stages for a new long range platform build. I like the 6.5 chamberings, but am always interested in something different.

Have not heard of it, but a Google search suggests it may be the 6.5 SAUM. If so it would be about 74 grains case capacity. That compares to 82 grains for the .264 WM. 68 for the 6.5 RM, 66 for the 6.5x284, and 93 grains for the Nosler 26. I have a couple of .264 WM and feel the case capacity is a bit much. So it make make some sense. However brass is going to be an issue. You are probably going to have to size down 300 SAUM Norma brass.

The more common choice in long distance target shooting with the 6.5 is the 6.5x284. Lapua makes brass for it. With a long barrel you should get over 3000 fps.

It's a wildcat formed from a 300 RCM. Not sure on the exact case capacity but don't think it is up to 74 grains, would have to check.
@ Robmcleod82 - do you have one?

Thanks! I am loving it so far.

Regrettably (?) there are no gophers where I live and I never seem to be able to make it down to shoot with Laverne so I load mostly 55 grain Bergers in the 700 for target and coyotes if my dogs haven't run them off before I get out with the gun :) and 40 grain Remington in the short barrel Savage. You gave the OP contact info?

Just came across this thread. I designed the 6.5 EXTREME to run the 140 Berger VLD to 3000 -3100 fps, in a 26" barrel, with less pressures than the 6.5-284, in an effort to reduce vertical stringing. It is designed on the 300 RCM formed to new brass dimensions, like my 20 EXTREME, and the chamber cut to fit the brass with minimum tolerances. This design eliminates the need to fire-form cases and virtually eliminates case stretch or the need for trimming if one does not hotrod the cartridge. Unlike the 284 and 7mm SAUM cases it does not have the rebated rim which does cause some feeding issues. The 140 Berger seats, just into the lands, with a COAL of 3.025" so a Long Action Remington Magnum action is required unless ahort action, that will accommodate this OAL, is used. The case holds 62 grains of Retumbo under the 140 Berger which is more than ample to reach my velocity goals.

Here is the drawing I made with the results of my load development in my prototype Remington 700 Long Range Hunter sporting a Kreiger#5 with 5R rifling in 1-8" twist.

I tested a 6.5-284, at the same time, and this is how it set up.

First trip to the range at 400 and 500 meters proved that 60 grains of Retumbo shot quite small groups with very little vertical.

The second 6.5 EXTREME was built by Jim Borden for a fellow from California who just loves his rifle and the 6.5 EXTREME Cartridge.

Any wonder why when it shoots loads like these hunting loads:

Another target shot by a happy fellow with his 6.5 EXTREME:

Please PM me with your email address if you want the 6.5 EXTREME story.

I have no plans to supply reamers or dies for this cartridge as my health is not that great. Perhaps Robmcleod 82 or some other gun nut that builds rifles could be persuaded to build a few if someone is interested?
