A few of us are considering building a 6.5 GAP 4S based on a necked down 7MM SAUM. Supposed to get good barrel life(3000+) with slightly reduced load that are still better in velocity than the 6.5x284.
Should it be built on a long action so bullets can be seated out?
Any experience out there?

I used a Wyatt's extended mag in a short action. Loaded with 140 Berger to shoot in the .081 freebore reamer the oal is about 2.91-2.92 Short action is fine but you'll have the normal "kinda mediocre" loading and cycling issues from a rem style bdl mag
About 3100 fps from a 25 inch tube with 61 grains h-1000 in mine
300 saum brass works better for necking down because the shoulder is a bit shorter and you don't have to turn the brass so far into the shouler or trim your brass right away either. I use rem brass and I'm at 7 loads with tight primer pockets still. You'll likely need to fireform to get rid of the runout from sized down cases but I found I needed about 100 or more rounds through the barrel for it to get up to speed anyways.

You'll need a few different bushings for initial sizing and a different one after turning.
I use about 3 grains more H-1000 than my 6.5-06 and gain about 130 fps more but apparently the pressures are lower and like you said barrel life should be greater but I haven't got there yet.

Dunno what else to add...if you want a short action hand loaders project go for it. Really happy with mine.

Pm me if you like

Thanks a lot for the info about the 6.5 gap. There are 3 of us. I have 2 300 wsm rifles that I can use. A t3 superlight and a Remington xcr sa . The superlight mag is 2.878 and a dummy cartridge that dimension jams in the 700 action.
Was the Watts you mentioned an action or the internal mag box?

The Wyatt's extended box mag is a replacement you can get for a factory rem internal mag.

I believe guys have done them on tikka's, not sure if they used 130 bergers or if it's possible to run a 300 win mag magazine to get the longer oal length for the 140's
