While I will be reloading for it, I want to start using my new-to-me HV 1900 in 6.5 swede (6.5x55).

I'm thinking of taking it out to hunt with this year as well. So, I've been looking for some factory rounds, in SP or other hunting loads.

Consistently, the best prices are for S&B and PPU. Even accounting for Federal's mail in rebate, they're still cheaper. I wonder if the brass is OK for reloading afterwards. I was told the PPU brass is OK, but wanted to know from the hivemind here. Also, which of these cartridges would be better for deer season?

Pretty much any ammo is good for deer ! SHOT PLACEMENT is the # 1 factor to killing . And don’t try any long shots to you get Proficient with your rifle . JMO RJ
To be sure. My main rifle this season will be my HVA 1640 30-06, which I've been practicing with a fair bit, and I like to think I'm pretty good with. The 1900 may be an alternate, if I can get enough range time.

I've reloaded some of the Privy Partisan and the S & B stuff back in the days of yore. Along with whatever else I happened to buy or pick up for my Swede's. All with great results. No issues at all. After 45 yrs of loading for different 6.5 swedes, I settled on the Lapua brass for my Tikka T-3 Forest when I got it 9 or 10 yrs ago.

You should have no issues at all if everything is done correctly. Best of luck with it...Happy reloading !

Brass head stamp brand - might have been a time when that meant something - not so sure now-a-days - I think much is "outsourced" - so made by someone else, with a "brand name" stamped on - or made by someone and sold at retail by someone else. I got several bags of "RUAG AMMOTECH USA, Inc." brass - at least that is the label on the bag - the actual brass is head stamped as "MFS", which is a Hungarian brass maker, I believe. No clue whom else they provide brass for. Maybe at one time Winchester, Remington, Norma, Lapua, Prvi Partizan, Sellier & Bellot made and sold their own brass - not so sure of that any more. Could all be made in China or India, or all by the same brass case maker, for all I know.

Hate reloading S&B brass. Super tight primer pockets and other things that piss me off lol. Expect to put in a lil bit of prep work there.

PPU works great fo me.

As the importer for Lapua for 30 years we know that Lapua-stamped brass is 100% made in Finland by Lapua and always has been, the exceptions being .223 and .270 Win years ago, which was Swedish and German manufacture. We just have had a visit from Lapua top executives assuring of regular deliveries of Lapua products.

Regards

Peter

Both S&B and PPU are good quality brass. Have loaded both but my preference is Norma. I've got Norma brass that is on it's 16th reload with no signs of fatigue but I neck size only and anneal every three firings.

This stuff is great, it allows me to try light weight bullets of great consistency. Then the brass is great for reloading . The case volume is very consistent across the batches I've purchased. Out of my CG63 I've got a 12"drop at 500m
Just a note I got mine earlier this year when it was about a loonie a round

Just be sure to work up your loads in your rifle, sticking to the reloading guide's data, as it is designed for staying within pressures limited for rifles such as yours.
Do not worry if your velocities are not max...safety and accuracy are more important, and most deer will never know the difference, as dead is dead.

I have had good luck with Winchester brass, but in my previous Swede's my favourite was Norma.
For my current rifle (recently new to me LH Steyr Mannlicher Model M FS), I have both Norma and Lapua brass on hand to try with 140 gr AccuBonds and SGK bullets. IMR4350 proved successful in my first 2 6.5's so will start there. If not, I also have IMR and H4831 to try, and still have a good supply of Re-22 on hand to try too.

Idk you can easily buy loaded lapua match ammo for 2bucks and change a round and end up with quality brass. Scenar s kill just fine

I load pretty much exclusively PPU in my Swede. Wasn’t a fan of the s&b brass.. haven’t gotten around to ordering anything fancy , just rattling off what I have around. Thinking about rebarelling my m96 then I may take the brass situation a bit more seriously.

If you can find it the sako stuff is really good ammo. My rifle grouped it 1” at 100 off a cheap bipod..

I had some 140gr Norma bullets from the 70s it really liked. But the best combo I’ve had so far is 130gr sierras match king and game kings with imr 4350

I purchased a few bx of the RWS JakMatch, and it preformed well. But I really got it for the high quality brass, with my mind on reloading it. I lucked out and found 2 bx of Swedish military surplus, which my CG63 was designed to use. When I shot the surp, average speed was 2500ish FPS with a standard 140 grain pill.
I then broke out the reloading supplies, and the VV web page. With a Lapua 9 gram / 139 grain pill I started a little low and did a ladder test. When I matched the surpluses speed, I got my best group. I took a few days rest (bronchitis), Then off to the range, end results are I forgot about the cold bore shot but the second hit a 2 MOA target.
