6.5 x 284 Norma

depends on the twist of the barrel........142 grain SMK over either H1000 or H4831sc powders. Bullets are easy to get, but those 2 powders will likely be discontinued before we see them in canada again, if you can spin it, the berger 156 grain is the bomb

6.5-284 Norma vs Winchester; not much difference the Norma is longer throated.
Bullet; I tried Sierra 142 and 140 SMK, the 140 grouped better at long range. The 140 POI was a bit lower but still better groups.
Powder; H4831sc velocity 2900-3000 fps.
Twist; 1-8.

I use 53gn of Reloader 22,just because I have 20lbs here to use up, with a Hornady 140gn ELD-M and it gives me 2950fps out of my Savage F Class. Best group of 0.19". Averages under .5" easily. I don't shoot competitively, so I'm not generally trying for small groups.

That cartridge seems made-to-order for the slow Alliant powders, Re25 and Re26, and for Vihtavuori N560. I'd be looking for something a little slower than H4831 or Re22. IMR 7828 (or, perhaps better, 7828ssc) should shine as well.

A little off-topic, perhaps, but I have a question about the 6.5x284 Norma. Is it pretty much a ballistic twin of the 6.5 PRC?

MY 6.5 PRC outperforms My 6.5 X 284 Norma - apples -apples by about 50-100 fps - and uses more powder to do it too ! LOL RJ

Building a NEW 28 " 6.5 x 284 Norma Now !
