I have pretty much settled on on the .338 lapua for my first rifle to start shooting well beyond 1000 yards but now I have started to think about my next rifle for 1000 yardish and under shooting for both paper punching and long range varmint hunting. I do have a sako 85 stainless synthetic in 22-250 but it isn't really designed for the long range work although I am sure it is capable, I would like to build something designed for it. Was thinking a 6.5x47 lapua. I want something that brass is available for and will have a long barrel life and be capable for very good accuracy. Your thoughts?

If you want long barrel life i wouldnt choose the 6.5X284, have you looked at the 6.5X47 lapua round or the 260 remington?

The 260 rem was my first choice but I thought I would up it to the 284. I was unaware the 6.5x284 was a barrel burner. A quick search shows it can be so maybe the 260 would be a solid choice.

Im leaning more towards the 6.5x47 lapua after further research. Anyone have one?

I have one, I use it for precision shooting matches, called tactical in teh US. Depending on your need, this will not be competitive as an F-class rifle out to 1000 yards, but will shoot that far. The beauty of this loading is that you can load accurate ammo to touch the lands and still have it cycle in a standard 308 magazine as the OAL will be 2.8 or less depending on the bullet. I had a chance to talk to one of the top US tactical shooters in Lodi and he was also a fan of teh 6.8-47 Lapua

The round is very accuarate and the recoil is mild so that you can spot your own shots, this is another important part of tactical shooting as you will have input from your spotter but can also use what you have seen as well.

I love this round for the above purposes, and i have several playing cards with holes in them from the 800 yard portion of ORA precision rifle matches.

Get some brass once fired brass from Dizzy Dan, bulk 300 gr smk and powder and mag primers etc and you will be loading 338lm for under $2 a shot.

6.5x47 will do 900m easily and with very good accuracy. Mild recoil and delayed impact allow easy siting of shots using the right scope.

The 6.5X47 Lapua won a 600 yard BR match first time out. It was designed for 300m comp. as the great 6mmBR Norma does not feed well from a magazine as required, and by CISM. Brass is the best an Lapua makes graet 6.5 bullets as do others.

Regards,

Peter
