So, really looking into getting into long range shooting. So far not looking to get a super competative rifle or get into any serious discipline but more for long range plinking. However I am at a standstill to how I should go about this. All I really know is I want to try out 6.5x55 since I have heard amazing things.

I was thinking of building up a rifle in a Savage 111 or Stevens 200 action and have an ad out looking for one right now.

However, was looking around and the Tikka T3 Varmint looks quite nice and from what I can gather should come out to be the same price as the build.

Since this is my first build, any opinions on what might be the better option? If buying is the better option, anyone know who might have a T3 varmint in 6.5x55? If I were to build, how much would I expect to get back by selling the stock, barrel and maybe the cheap optic that comes with most Savage 111 rifles?

Thanks.

you can get a savage axis for around 300.00 ( they go on sale every so often under 300.00 ) , and it uses the same barrel as the other savages .
the action is supposed to be stiffer , and in theory have potential for better accuracy .

the aftermarket is starting to pick up for these guns , and they have been out long enough that there are more than a few "how too" threads out there on them .

what I really like about savage rifles is you can easily swap out barrels and be using a different round in minutes .

I know a lot of guys look down through their nose at these rifles , but they are solid , inexpensive rifles and are easy to tinker with .

the money saved on one of these can easily be spent on a better scope , or reloading equipment , or components .

My vote goes to tikka. The tikka action is in a different class then savage.

Also I'd like to see burnt_servo do a savage barrel change in minutes.

To start this process, consider the following:

What trigger pull weight do you want?

What type of mag system do you want or is single feeding the goal?

What type of stock do you want... eventually?

What are the accuracy goals you want?

What budget do you have for this project?

I have a bunch of articles and projects on my site... with more coming as my website gets rebuilt... So many ways to go but the key is what you want in your hands????

Also, I have a bunch of stuff on clearance.. mix and match and you can build up a great shooting rig for less money.

So....

Trigger pull? not ure to be honest. Im used to old military rifles with heavier triggers.

For mag, would like a detachible type but would not be opposed to a fixed.

Was looking at a Boyds Varmint stock.

Accuracy, well not looking for a super accurate competative gun, sub MOA would make me happy, maybe 3/4 MOA?

For funds, was hoping for the $1000 plus or minus one or two hundred not including optic.

This build was going to be a winter project so no major rush.

Given your goals and budget, unless you already have the donor, it will be hard to make your costs. If you do not include the action costs, then quite easy with a Savage/Stevens.

Consider a factory Savage or Tikka.

You may need to compromise on the chamber...

How much am I looking at for the build I mentioned? If I were to go the Tikka, would the stainless model be preferable over the standard?

Great cartridge! I have a friend who has a Tikka Varmint in 6.5X55 and it is a great rifle for the price.

I had a custom one made by the Chou Brothers and love it (see below). It has everything that any of the short action 6.5MM cartridges and I would say a bit more.

Happy to discuss build specs and pricing.

Please PM or email as I can't discuss this stuff in the open forum.

Most important is to have your goals and objectives ironed out... parts are easy once we know what we are trying to achieve.

If you need to ask whether or what you should or shouldn't build, then make life easy and enjoyable and start with a factory tikka until you reach its limitations. By that time, you will know what you prefer, and hence, what to build. The Tikka will not give you any hard times. A $900 rifle and a $150 stock direct from boyds will do fine. Throwing money at a lack of practice will not result in performance. I appreciate the folks who peddle parts and accessories here, but be careful when hearing the merchants opinion about what it is that you want. They can sell many things, but experience is not one of them.
