6.5x55 the little overachiever.

In North America the 6.5 CM is being driving by American marketing. Gotta sell new guns; create a desire, then sell a product to fulfill that desire. Next come "mine is better than yours" mentality to justify it. What ever makes you happy.

Gun companies have been reinventing the wheel for decades in this regard. There are so many cartridges out there that perform so similar that there is no practical reason for their existence but demand creates supply. As long as they can convince shooters/hunters that the newest offering is somehow better they will. Plus most of us like to own something a little different, me included.

the 6.5x55 is a classic and very excellent cartridge. For all the comparisons to 6.5 Creedmoor I'd say they mostly do the same thing but I'd give an edge to the x55 ballistically. The main advantage to a creedmoor is it fits in a short action and is as simple as a new barrel for any rifles chambered in 308 or standard bolt face short action cartridges. If your rifle is long action you might as well get the extra case capacity and generous OAL the 6.5x55 offers.

American marketing makes a fetish out of minor differences that sound like a big deal when you spend all your time online. If you get out into the real world (a pretty small segment these days where bolt actions are concerned) issues of action length are pretty unimportant, particularly if the preferred cartridge is not as comfortable being slammed through the action.

The CM has an advantage in a lot of game scenarios, and those are now the majority of shooting NA shooters do. I would be happy with one, other than the fact I have already committed to the 55, and I prefer it. But there are a lot more options in the CM these days and some of them are hard to pass on.
