6.5x55 to 6.5x284

Yes, you can do it. The boltface is typically .490 for the Swede where most boltfaces for the .308 can be anywhere from .480 to .490.
I have a Rem 700 30-06 bolt that uses the Swede cartridge no problem.
Check and make sure the Swede bolt will extract a .284 case before hand.
 
Neck will not completely clean up?? Not sure how you will proof test the result, if you are thinking to do this on Swede 96 or 38. Stiga and others went up in power/pressure on these actions, but always with a new (fatter) barrel, especially in chamber area ...
 
Set the barrel back slightly and have it opened up to 6.5x55AI. It'll have lots of jam, brass is easier to find and less expensive as well.

Walk us through the economics of this please (6.5X55 AI vs. 6.5-284):

- gunsmithing costs: barrel setback and rechambering vs. rechambering only;
- custom dies vs. regular production dies; and
- brass costs.
 
Either move is a way to screw up a perfectly good rifle for little gain; probably 50 fps with the AI and 100 fps with the 6.5-284.

With all due respect .. It can not be possible they got it right with the 6.5 x 55 over a hundred years ago in 1894/ or what ever the year was. . If they did git it right we wouldn't be still trying to improve it, change it, to make the superior cartridge it should have been in the first place. The 6.5 x 55 has to be wrong, or we wouldn't still be fixing it after all these years.
