6.8

Switching a bunch of countries to a totally new infantry round would sure stimulate the global economy though, eh? Hundreds of thousands of new rifles to be produced along with the ammunition.

omfg that would be fricking awesome. A new nato round would be the best thing to happen to the civvy surplus market since the switch to autoloaders.

"Hey, Wendy! The 5.56 isn't a military round anymore! Doesn't the AR15 seem a lot less scary all of a sudden?"

"...is the 6.8mm a NATO round or soon to be..." Nope. Won't happen unless the U.S. changes their service round. Both the 7.62 x 51 and 5.56 were jammed down NATO's throat by the U.S.
In the mid to late 50's, several European countries were working on a 7mm service cartridge, but the U.S. had selected the 7.62 and demanded it be adopted. Same thing happened when they went to the 5.56 in the 60's.

Also the pic of the wound channel in ballistics gelatin with the spoon tip projectile tells me this might make this a nifty little hunting round for work on Deer etc.

Imagine how light the hunting rifle could be.
Technology is really cool these days. :)

The Bits are still mad about that! Especially since the 6.8SPC has almost exactly the same ballistics as the 7mm/.280-30 that the Americans refused to accept.

Sunray is right, though, if the Americans switch, everyone else will eventually have to switch as well. On the other hand, several countries (Germany comes to mind), kept using the older cartridge for many years after most members switched, so 5.56 NATO would still be "in use" for quite a while.

The last NATO STANAG was supposed to be for adopting a new cartridge (5.7 for the FN P-90), but H&K and "ze germans" produces their own version, and are holding things up.
