6.8mm Rem SPC

Hi folks...

I have yet to enter the precision world, but am wanting to quite badly! I've been eying up the 6.8mm Rem SPC Remington 700 that is up in the EE. I have a few questions though regarding the caliber.

From what I've been reading, the 6.8 was developed to bridge the gap between 5.56 and 7.62, while fitting into current AR platforms. Is this caliber a contender for a precision gun? I've always been looking at getting a 7.62/.308, but as I said, the trade option on that gun are tempting me.

What would be an estimated barrel life?

I've wanted the .308 because I always wanted to get into distance shooting (<1000m) and I already have tonnes of nice Norma/Lapua brass for it... BUT... the range I'm a member at only has a 400m range, and most places I shoot on crown land wouldn't allow for anything really close to 1000m.

Also ammo/brass/reloading component prices would also be a factor. I was reading that the 6.8mm is based off the 270 Winchester, and that you can use those projectiles for reloading...

Sorry I'm kind of all over the place here, but any input would be great. Basically, should I wait to save for a nice .308/7.62, or consider the 6.8?

It is indeed a military cartridge meant to add kinetics to an otherwise poor anti-material cartridge.

Two BIG detractors:

1) Components. There are very few good .277 bullets out there for match performance and there is not a great selection of brass. (These use the same bullets as a .270)

2) The size of the cartridge does not have capacity for sending long heavy bullets long distances. It is essentially a slightly fatter 223 case.

I expect barrel life would be excellent. 3000+ rounds.

For your purposes, a 6BR would be hard to beat.

As to accuracy, you are affected - again - by the availability of 270 match bullets. Berger does make them, (130, 140 and 150 grains) but if each gun has specific likes, If your gun doesn't like Berger, there really isn't a second choice. In my opinion, these bullets are too heavy for that case.

The 6.8 would not be where I put my funds for a precision build. Case too small, not enough match bullets to keep me interested. Sierra and Hornady also have bullets but there are more for fighting then LR plinking.

Think of the SPC as a modern 7.62X39.

Why not a fast twist 223? No issue reaching out beyond 1400yds.

Great fun at close range too.

The only down side to a short 6BR is that it is not easy to feed from the mag. If single loading, awesome.

There are a wide range of truly accurate chamberings and bullets. Have a look at 6mmBR.com and other accuracy minded sites and you will see a trend to what most of us prefer to us.

130grain Hornady inter-bond, 130 Barne TSX , these two make a very good reloading bullet for 1/10twist 270win.
270win have not been used much as a long range target, but doesn't mean that it doesn't make it as One.
If you can find Special Weapon magazine with Aug/sept 2008, there a good Article on Custom Remington M700BDL 270win.
