Hey All:

So I bought a Daniel Defense M4V5 in 5.56mm last fall. I have been thinking of getting a 6.8mm SPC II rifle, and if possible, just get a 6.8mm upper to put on my 5.56mm lower. From what I have been able to figure out, it seems it is possible to put a 6.8mm upper on a 5.56mm lower. One needs a new bolt carrier group and new magazines. Can anyone here verify that that is correct?

The upper I found for sale includes the bolt carrier group, so that would only mean I would need some magazines. I haven't had any luck finding some Canadian legal 5-round magazines however. Lots of 10 rounders and 25 rounders on Brownells and other American sites, but no 5 rounders that I have been able to find. I would have thought there would be at least a few states that required a 5-round limit for hunting that would have resulted in some being available for sale. Anyone know of where I can find some 5-round magazines?

I did find some Robinson Armament XCR 6.8mm 5-rounders. I was hoping that maybe they would be useable in an AR-15, since I believe the 5.56mm Robinson Armament rifles use the STANAG AR-15 magazines. Anyone know if in fact their 6.8mm magazines can be used in AR-15s?

Thanks

You don't need a whole new bolt carrier group, just a bolt.

I have been using cproducts mags for my 6.8spc with no problems for years. I altered 20 rounders to make 5 rounders because at the time they didn't make them. They now make them, Don't know if they ship to Canada.

6.8spc ammo will fall out of a 7.62x39 ar mag. (They did for me)

Thanks for the help. I ordered the Robinson Armament XCR 6.8mm magazine, since it sounds like it will fit. From what I understand it is just an 5.56mm AR-15 magazine with a 6.8mm follower. Now I just have to wait for the upper to arrive from Wolverine Supplies. That and to decide what optic to put on. Right now leaning towards a Vortex Viper PST 1-4 X 24

I have never had that problem and all I use are 7.62X39 pistol mags for my 6.8 SPC XCR-L, I accidentally grabbed a 7.62X39 pistol mag and put 5.56 in it, they did not stay in very well.

I don't want to hijack this post but since we are kinda on the subject 7.62X39 or 6.8SPC as a hunting round for under 300 yards in a XCR-L which would you chose & why I would most likely reload the 7.62x39 round for hunting

I finaly got out and tried the new 6.8mm now that the weather has warmed up a bit. Both the XCR-L 7.62x39 pistol mags and the XCR 6.8mm rifle magazines worked perfectly.

Brocolt: I am guessing you are wanting more specific load information, but I don't have any as I can't hunt with my restricted 6.8mm and neither of my 7.62x39s are accurate enough. But in general, you can get slightly heavier rounds in 7.62x39. The 6.8 has higher velocity though. The 6.8mm is a flatter shooter, with longer range, but you said you are interested in shots less than 300 metres, so that doesn't really apply. The 7.62X39 ammo is much easier to find. I picked up a few boxes of 6.8mm at the local Wholesale Sports, but I cleaned them out and they haven't gotten any more in. Since then I have ordered all my ammo off the internet. There is at least a few places in Canada that does sell 6.8mm to choose from. While 7.62x39 is much more readily available, all the realy cheap stuff is surplus ammo with crappy accuracy. The better 7.62x39 is still cheaper though. I don't know if it is any more accurate though. Can one buy really high quality 7.62x39 ammo?

I went with the 6.8spc due to the higher velocity bullets/loads available that will reliably expand on deer size game to 300 + yards.

Due to the much slower velocities in a 7.62X39 I do not believe there are bullets available that will reliably expand beyond 200 yards limiting the distance you can hunt with this round compared to the 6.8spc.

I reload for my 6.8spc spec 11 chamber 18.6" barreled XCR-L and my 23" saami spec chambered T/C Contender carbine.

I've never bought factory ammo yet = my loads of AA2200 powder with 95gr Barnes TTSX @ 2880fps in the XCR and 2960fps in the Contender are far more accurate in both these rifles than the XCR haters will admit is possible from an XCR-L.

I have shot 3 deer with these 95gr TTSX loads all were DRT distance were appr 50 - 200 yards.

Lapua and Prvi mke excellent quality 762x39 - but regardless of quality, 300 yards is pushing it. If you think of it as a modern version of a 30-30 Win, you're a lot closer. What the x39 gives up in energy at short ranges (where it still has more than enough to do the job), it gains beyond 100 due to better bullet design. Generally the x39 is a good bush cartridge, where game will be under 100, just like 30-30.

When Ruger first produced their Mini 30 in 7.62X39 they promoted it as/compared it to their 44 mag rifles = max 150 yard deer hunting combo.

No question the 6.8 is superior to x39 for hunting beyond 200y....it flies faster, flatter, and hits harder with more ft./lbs of energy retained.
That said though,if as mentioned previously, you think of the x39 as comparable to a .30-30 and accept the limitations of 200-250ish yards max for deer, why not take the x39 out of the running and wait for the .300BLK to become available here?
Ballistically speaking, the x39 and .300BLK are almost identical, with an ever so slight edge going to the BLK.
The really nice things, being as: A)you mentioned reloading hunting bullets for the x39,so I'll assume you already reload(?),and B)you are deciding on a conversion for your XCR,is that the .300BLK's parent cartridge is the 5.56.
Soooo...that said, the caliber conversion is a simple barrel swap.BLK uses the same bolt/same mags that you already have in your 5.56.
Again, being as you already reload,BLK brass is very simple to make from 5.56 brass with just the dies and a case trimmer,so it will never be in short supply, and you can handload quality hunting ammo for it cheaper than buying Chinese surplus x39!
Win/win/win....yer not giving up anything vs. an x39 conversion,in fact a weeeee bit better ballistics and save sizeable chunk of cash on the conversion, new mags/new bolt et all.
Admittedly, your sacrificing some downrange/200m+ performance vs. the 6.8SPC......but just sayn'.....the x39 is a distant 3rd for options IMHO.

Sure 7.62x39 can be a fun round to shoot, I should have added that I personally didn't think 7.62x39 was an accurate enough round for hunting over 300m & I haven't looked into 6.8spc info or round so I don't know much about it.
having an XCR I was thinking of a second barrel.
