I am thinking of buying a sako in 6 PPC and just wonder if anyone out here has one? I am new to this cartridge and have been pouring over the net looking for pros and cons. I can tell right away sako brass is scarce but 220 russian is relatively available.

If anyone has one let me know your thoughts on the cartridge and what your using if for. i.e. hunting or target shooting and what make of rifle are you using it in?

The rifle in question is an older sako A1 repeater with a sporter weigh barrel. Being a sako fan I don't think it will take much to be convinced I need it.

Thanks in advance

I have the Sako Benchrest single shot in 6PPC, with a heavy 20" barrel and use it to shoot paper.
With a 36x Weaver on mine, the thing is stupid accurate. I can't drive it to the rifles potential.

Lapua 220 russian brass must be neck-turned to fit my chamber - YMMV.
I consider that to be a good thing, but it's an additional step and adds to your investment in the brass.

Most 6mm PPC's are pretty slow twist, and may not stabalize the heavier hunting (big game) type bullets. just a thought, but perhaps someone else who has actually tried it will chime in.

That's my thoughts as well. I think the 6 PPC shines as a bench gun's cartridge, but for big game you want a fast twist barrel suitable for heavy game bullets, and more powder capacity so you get get some steam out of them.

I am gathering this as I do my research. I have read that due to the standard twist rates these guns were built with bullets up to 70 grs would be good. Which would put the little repeater in the windy day coyote rifle category.

Thanks guys for the replies fellas. I just like to know what I might be getting myself into!!

I have read the brass is an issue and fireforming is a very real possiblity. However the accuracy claims from those that shoot this cartridge have me very interested. The reality is I am just hoping I can justify another rifle........I won't need much coaxing

I have the same Sako A1 sporter that your looking at. I shoot 55 gr ballistic tips at 3400 fps on coyotes and have shot deer with the 70 gr BT's at 3200 fps with exits on broad side shots.

Wow nice!! My thinking is if the conditions were perfect say shots under 100 yds and the rifle managed to shoot a decently constructed bullet it could be used on deer. If not it would be a terrific rifle for coyotes here on the ever windy prairie of Saskatchewan. Being as how I have enough capable big game calibers I think I will stick with them and use the 6ppc for the coyotes. Pm inbound

There are no flies on the 6mmBR.
I own two....one is a HB rifle, set up for 1000 yard competition.
1-8" twist, and it shoots the 105-108 grain VLD bullets very well, indeed.
The other is an ultralight sporter with a 1-9" twist 22" pencil profile Shilen barrel.
I shoot the 85 Partition or the 90 grain Scirocco II for deer.
Very effective. I have taken a muley at 340 yards with it. One shot DRT.

One of the guys at the camp has an old Sako hunter 6mm PPC and loves it.
Super accurate and enough power for where we hunt, never let him down.

My dad has taken a few deer with his Sako hunter, but now is mainly gets used as his coyote rifle. Works fine for deer, although it is a bit on the light end of the scale for a deer cartridge. It's basically a light 243

. It's basically a light 243
. Yes it is and some folks who have loaded the 243W down to the level of a 6PPC report very fine accuracy. I imagine a guy could find a better (and more convenient) round for deer than a 6PPC. The 6BR would certainly be one ....and I have witnessed a 243w win a 1000yd match fwiw. I am pretty certain that a 6PPC can harvest deer but probably not with the same bullets that it has built its wonderful reputation for accuracy on. Also it is my understanding that 6PPC doesnt feedwell from a magazine. Personally though - if I could find a reasonably priced hunting weight 6PPC rifle (and dies, brass etc) I'd sure give it a try!
