600 yard rifle

I have been thinking I should build the rifle into a dedicated long range rifle. By long range I mean 500 to 600 yards. With enough energy at 600 yards to down an elk or moose with the right bullet and the right shot placement of course.

My thoughts one the rifle would be something like this.

Savage 110 re-barreled to 338-06
Barrel to be a medium heavy sportter contour at 26" with recessed crown.
Trigger set to 1.5 pound pull
Piller bedded into ether a Boyds laminate or a Bell & Carlson stock with free floating barrel.

Thinking of 180 - 200 grain Barns or Nosler bullets.

Or should I just go to the 338 Win. Mag. Maybe even drop down to the 7MM Rem. Mag. I know someone will suggest the 300 Win Mag but sorry to say I have no interest in the 300 Win Mag.

Give me your thoughts as all suggestions are appreciated
 
"...a dedicated long range rifle..." Nobody should ever take a 600 yard shot on large game. No hunting cartridge has the energy for a clean kill at those distances. And the bullet drop is enormous.

I would have suggested the 300 WM but since you have an aversion I'll step down to the 7mmRM. 600 isn't a horrendously great distance and a good 160gr .284" bullet will work just fine. Plus it won't boot the hell out of you in a standard-weight or slightly heavy rifle. No need for a 20 pound rig.

Although a 600 yard shot on an animal can be seen as irresponsible since so many things can go wrong, and there will be a LOT of bullet drop, the statement that "no hunting cartridge has the energy for a clean kill at those distances" is 100% incorrect. Typical.

A .300 winmag will have about the same energy at the muzzle as a .30/30. Care to take a guess how many moose have been taken down with one of those? I'd say it's a lot.

edit: I sometimes wonder if sunray has ever been hunting or shooting. He must not have time for it with all those posts!
 
I'd say a 7RM or 300WM or variants there of. Really doesn't need to be dedicated long range rifle though. I've got several that I'm comfortable from 1-600 yards with. I would up your trigger pull for a hunting rifle...say 2-2.5 pounds.
 
This oughta do the trick. Just be sure to use the right ammo, or it's only good out to 400 meters.:)

And on the serious side of things, I've always been a fan of the .338 Win Mag

Are you hunting on a quad, with no muffler, wearing jangling spurs, a sparkly thong, drapped in a sequins jacket, and so reaking of cougar urine that you can't possibly get closer to an animal?????

How come I never see these guys shoot this good at the range?

I agree, a rifle doesn't need to be a heavy weight dedicated long range gun to do well at 600 yards, I also have quite a few standard sporter weight rifles that will do it quite nicely. For myself I don't even use a real high power scope although there I'll say that depends on your eyesight and tastes, I just use my usual 3-9x40.

Even a very large moose is a very tiny target at 600 yards.

Yes, and practice in field conditions. Cross sticks, bipod, prone, hood of your pickup whatever you're going to do. I really don't have a problem with people taking long shots, as long as they do their homework and use their heads.

no 600m range in BC anywhere close to me, the woods are the only real option and make for better real world training

For the OP, the 7mm STW is a great performer way out there, or the 7RM will do just fine as well. I don't have much experience with the 338 stuff, so can't help you there.
