68 vs 69 grain for CG

Never had much success with Hornady, and never saw any benchrest guys use them they sure liked Sierra & Bergers

I'm not sure what relevence bench rest or bolt gun shooting has to do with your question:rolleyes: however,
The accuracy with the 69 SMK fell apart past 300m when I tried them with my black special when it still had a 1:10 twist barrel. I never tried the Hornady 68 HPBTs, but they are slightly longer than the 69 SMKs, and will likely give poorer results. I stress that your milage may very though...

The 69 SMKs are very close in length to the 63 grain FMJ RUAG uses in its GP90 ammo, so they are definately worth further exploration.
One thing I never tried is loading them a little longer, and making them a little hotter -this may iron out the long range accuarcy - if it is an issue for you.

I have tried both and have had varying results. The 68 grain hornadys performed better in one rifle and the 69's performed better in a different rifle. I have had very good results with the similar, and somewhat less expensive Nosler Competition 69 grainers. I load these with 25.2 gr W748 and have had very good results in both my .223's. If you ever use these bullets on varmints as well as targets, I have found that the hornady outperforms the sierra, and the nosler seems to terminally outperform both.
