Hey all,

I picked up a .690 rb mould yeaterday and went to work casting a few up, after the first few went back in the pot the rest were perfect.

Now I come to reload them in 2.75 Win AA hulls using HS-6 and I checked my manual for load data and there was none for the .690RB and HS6.

Since I already load Lee 1oz slugs at 32.4 grains (max 36) with hs6 and these RBs are aprox 1.1oz is it ok to use the same powder charge for the round balls or should I reduce the charge to 31 to start?

My thought is that the load I am using now is fine for the round balls because it is 10 percent below the 1oz max slug load already.

My shotgun reloaders book had a couple loads for .690 round balls but none with HS6 to look up a correct starting load.

Looking for some expert advice here guys and if you load .690 RBs with hs6 what charge do you use?

Thanks,
Cactus

HOWDY . IF it is not in a loading book there is a reason. I have used UNIQUE and guessamated after studying loading books and then down-loaded when useing round ball . I am just a back woods cowboy making red-neck loads ,Expert loads you need to call the powder or loading book people.

I'm sure your load is safe, how do they fit in the case?

Hi Ben,

I am using some Western cheap wads that are supposed to be the same as waa 12s. They fit about the same as the key slugs, snug but not bulging the sides. The only differene is that they sit a little lower in the wad so I need more cards under the balls to raise them up to get a proper fold crimp. If not the crimp is really sunk in.

I thought the load would be ok as it is good for slugs and what Lee suggests and I use for .312 9 ball buckshot that is just over 1oz. It is a bit of a bonus if I can load all 3 without changing the bushing.

I use a load all and don't have a roll crimp tool. I read that cutting the was petals down helped, maybe I'll give that a try

Thanks for the advice guys, I cant wait to try these solid oversize BBs out of my smooth bore Mossberg.

I'm doing the same thing here... Just making up some redneck water jug blasting loads. LOL

Well, I emailed Hodgdon and asked if they had any load data, still waiting for a reply.

To be safe I am going to load a few at 31.5 and 32.5 and test fire them on the weekend weather permitting. My slugs shoot about 1.5" high at 50 yards, I'm curious to see where these pumpkin balls shoot at 50 and 100 yards.

I used .690 ball with petals cut(a ball isn't hollow like slugs and might overpressure going thru choke). Check to see if ball +wad is a jam fit in your choke. I use a card wad under ball.

No choke to worry about on my guns, all smoothbore. I have to put a card or 3 under the ball to get the height right for a proper crimp.

Thanks,

HOWDY ; card wads seem to be needed in BALL loads to avoid powder blow by up the side of rhe wad . I use .672 ball in a full (with petal ) shot cup with two 20gauge hard cardboards under it. Over fold as nessary.
Used .662 ball as they pass most chokes but poor accuracy. I always hand push the payload exiting the barrel through the choke to check for resistance.
GO slow ,think twice ,shoot once.
