He did some shooting at 290 & 436 yards the other day

Little persons voice, “400 yards!” 😁

CGN needs a like button. Great stuff TB.

Anyway these are heavy for cal high sd options beat suited for penetration and increasing hit probability at distance due to high bc and sd. Neither of which you need for coyotes and gophers. There are better attributes out there for that. A .243 would make my list for that as only 6mm and run light for cal. A .22-250 makes even more sense than that and maybe a .223 or .204 if you had to have and extra short AR length action platform. The .22 arc is same thing, heavy for cal deep penetrating high sd options that suit big game much better than gophers and coyotes

All three are the wrong formula for coyotes and gophers...speed with low sd and light for cal is what you want there. Not slow high sd heavy for cal.

6 ARC bolt gun data from Hornady shows 5 powders that will push a 58gr Vmax at 3550-3600 fps. That'll provide a +/- 2" MPBR out to 283 yards (223 55gr @ 3250 fps is 260 yards, 204 Ruger 40gr @ 3750 fps is 299 yards, and 22-250 55gr @ 3650 fps is 289 yards) so the 6 ARC is right amonst the top handgul of traditional coyote cartridges for point and shoot effectiveness at typical calling distances. Even the 6 ARC loaded with the 80gr ELD-VT @ 3050 fps has a respectable MPBR of 260 yards. 80gr ELD VT impact speed at 300 yards is 2420 fps, 22-250 55 Vmax is 2550 fps, so it has plenty of retained speed to make splats. (500y 1950 fps 22-250 55vmax / 2050 fps 6 ARC 80 ELDVT) I'd say a hunter would benefit more from the 25% less wind deflection with the 6 ARC 80gr than he would the 11% further MPBR of the 22-250. If you're long bombing gophers, the wind deflection is even a bigger deal

good info, guy will have to weigh out if he's a reloader or factory ammo shooter and see what gopher/coyote is likely to find on the shelf, reloading increases versatility a few hundred percent over the off the shelf crowd, 6-arc is a super cartridge (along with 6.5 and .22 versions of the grendel), prepare to reload, also if fur collecting is a thing, or ricochet management

I'm a big fan of the x39 case and used it exclusively for 6 seasons of big game hunting, with kids as they got their first few seasons also, it's a bit much for coyotes but I use it for them also, ripped open a wolf pretty good too, too much bullet for saving fur, as a rule with these modern heavy for cal prs type cartridges, factory loads all we use, they are heavy for cal....better fit for coyotes/gophers off the shelf, fill yer boots if you reload

I get the impression questions like these aren't usually asked by reloaders however. ;)

The ELDVT bullets are beasts in their weight class

I had a 6arc 1:8 barrel put on a tikka action last fall and used it to shoot a big ole southern AB whitetail buck. Shot was 290 yards prone, perfect shot in the crease of the shoulder, 103 ELDX handload going 2800fps. The buck took 2 steps and faceplanted dead on the third, was able to watch the impact in the scope on account of the very minimal recoil. Found the remainder of the EDLX against the offside hide and it was a picture perfect mushroom, very impressive wound channel for a small projectile. Would highly recommend this round to anyone wanting a varmint or antelope/deer round at moderate ranges, three offerings of in stock factory ammo helps too. Had it out to 636 yards making consistent impacts on sub MOA targets, very impressed, going to change the scope from a vx3 ZL to a vx5 ZL2 for more elevation to see how far i can push it accurately.
This round also uses a small rifle primer which are somewhat available for reloading purposes which is another bonus.

Awesome! Is it feeding from an aftermarket/AI mag setup?

What would you compare that wound channel to?

Thanks!

It’s a basic tikka T3x that started life as a 223. The gunsmith opened the bolt face to fit the irregular 6ARC requirements and I can still use the factory cheap polymer mag without any mods.
As far as the wound channel, I just recall being very impressed and wouldn’t hesitate to use on deer sized game going forward with the 103 ELDX.
