This fall the savage 12 F-Class will have in stock the 6mm BR.
The twist rate works with 1:8 and wil shoot 107 gr match bullets which would take you out to ###X distance which i am sure 1000 yards. I have notices that this is a pretty popular round at the major comps in teh U.S.

I do have a 6mm PPC but it shoots 68 grainers and gets squirley on me past 500 y.

I had a post earlier about the 12 F Class 6.5x284 but have turned my intrest to a 6mm BR round.

Any Comments or suggestions about this set up. Will not be availible for a while.

Also what scopes are you 1000 yard guys using, what works best, I have a few MK 4s Leupods 10x inch tubes and a few 6x20s VXIIIs but what do you and a bunch of elites all powers and sizes. I likely have one that will fit nice on this rig this fall. But whats best high or lower power, and what MOA rail should I go with. I have rifles set up for 100 to 500 yards and only walked out to 1000 a few times with limited success

Thanks guys

Jay

I would recommend a chamber set up for unturned Lapua brass... about a .272" neck diameter and as short a throat as you can go using your bullet of choice seated just into to the shoulder of the case... chase the rifling as it wears...

For LR fun and entry level F class, sure why not. The 6.5-284 is a much better wind cheater then the 6BR but it also wears a lot faster, costs more to shoot and boot more.

Once the action is properly bedded, I would expect 1/2 min accuracy to be the norm with quality loads. sub MOA at 1000yds is a definite possibility if you can dope the winds. You can take this rig to a mile if you had enough elevation.

For rings, Burris sig zee w/inserts. Bases 1 piece MOA - EGW or Farrell.

Scopes, I am partial to the Bushnell Elite 4200. Optics and mechanicals are superb for the money spent. The new Tactical will give you more then enough up to go from 100 to 1000yds. The 6x24 AO has better optics at full mag and if you set up using one of the dot for close range, you can get to 1000yds on turrents too. Used ones are very reasonable in price.

The Nikon Buckmaster are a great deal but don't have as much mag or features as the Elites. But are a few hundred cheaper. Nikon Monarchs are very good too and about the same price as the ELites but not so easy to get in Canada.

From there you spend as much as you want. Between the Leupold, IOR, and Nightforce, you are not gaining much if any on optics and mechanicals. You will gain on elevation adjustment in some models but you are now upwards of three times the cost.

The best optics I have seen recently is the S&B. Wonderful glass but at $3000ish, too rich for me.

The upcoming Elite 6500 and Sightron SIII promise top quality glass/mechanicals for about 2/3 the cost of the L/N/I crew. Hoping to test some in the coming months.

If you are not too fussy on super clear glass, the Tasco Super sniper and Elite 3200's offer great value for low dollars.

Personally, for what the F class rifles are asking for (assume $1000+), I would just build my own and have a rig that would be match competitive too.

Yes thats a good idea , I am sure the factory rifle being a savage has a long throat.

But barrels are cheep LOL!!!

I would like to stick to the factory class rifle.

I know i can build a gem! but not looking for that.

I use 6BR extensively, I compete in F-class with it and I have a 1-mile range at my place that I experiment with all the time. 6BR has no trouble reaching a mile accurately, provided your base and your scope can accommodate the ~60 minutes you need to do it.

From the accounts I hear, Dennis is right. All reports about the Savages (6BR and 6.5X284) are that their factory throats are too long. If you want to keep it stock, try the 107 Sierras or even the 105 Amax. It has the longest base-to-ogive of all the readily found in 105-ish bullets and if your barrel likes them, they shoot very well. Bergers and Sierras are the two bullets that are the easiest to make work in the biggest variety of 6BR's. From my experience and the experience of a few people I shoot with, Lapuas are the worst - in spite of their excellent consistency. I have tried many many different combinations of powders, bullets, primers and barrels and I canNOT make lapua 6mm bullets work worth beans. I know CyaN1de has had exactly the same problems. Go figure...

For glass, I love the Leupy 8.5-25X50 the most for its clarity, side focus and reticle (Fine target dot) , however I also have fixed power Weaver T-36's and Nightforce 12-42X56 on BR's and all work very well.

If you want to shoot factory class, check with your match director. There have been some debates on some US boards if these and the 40X/XR100's, Coopers, HS and so forth should be allowed in factory class matches.

Maybe there are concerns at your range???????

Judging from the 6mmBR site, Benchrestcentral, 300meter world championships, CISM and FClass around the world, the Lapua is not hard to load. Doesn't mean it's best in your rifle, but it continues to work for many top shooters. As you will hear many times, try different bullets.

Peter

Peter,

One of my friends uses Lapuas in his 6BR's and they are phenomenal. I cannot figure out why I have never been able to get them to work! You're absolutely right in that they are the choice of many top shooters.

I think the 107s are the way to go with the 1:8 twist.

It will take 4 months min to get this rifle so i can put a lot of thought into it, I might just order a second pipe to go along with it, I understand the savages change out easy.

But the BR it is over the old 6.5 bucker. I think It will suit me better since i do most shooting at teh ranges 100-300 and get out in my fields to 600.

I did find a spot that can do 1000 by GPS for me.

Sounds like my rail will need a serious MOA cant to get the 60 MIn o A out of teh scope.

Can't beat the 6 BR for just being a pleasure to shoot. I shoot Lapua's w Gaillard bbl with RL15 in 105s and have had some great group with Benchmark
and lighter bullets as well. Iv'e custom built mine but a factory should
shoot just fine, and the cartridge is inherently accurate and finding loads
was quit easy compared to most. I can tell you that getting the seating
depth right is important, so I would shoot the factory till I couldn't get to
the lands and then rebbl.
