My gunsmith who is doing up my rifle in 6mm BR. asked me what bullet I will be shooting and how I wanted to seat them. Also to send him 2 empty rounds with bullets seated to where i want them. Well I have no idea!!! I originally intended to be shooting at 300 as this is where most of my shooting takes place. The tube has a 8 twist to it. I had planned on shooting 88 to 107 gr. projectiles. Varget as being my choice of propellent. I have been advised to go the 105/107 bullets. So what I am asking is what would be the min.seat depth with a good charge of varget for this combination. THANKS.

If you are not going to build a br gun if it is for hunting and target shooting I would go with a reg throat maybe a little longer but not much also if you plan on a mag feed make sure they fit in the mag I know varget will fill the case pretty good I have a 22br and it is a crush load in mine with 55grainers it may not be a crush with 6br I am not sure you could check load datas for that one good luck.

What I would do is take the longest bullet or whatever heavy bullet you may want to shoot and seat it into the case until the pressure ring on the bullet is just above the neck/shoulder junction. If it is a BT or VLD design the base of the bullet can extend into the case passed the neck/shoulder. Just make sure the pressure ring is above the junction. You loose a bit of case capacity but it should be minimal for what you want. If you set it up this way it should leave your leade short enough to be able to reach the lands with shorter bullets if you ever plan on trying them. It also gives you lots of room to chase the lands as the leade grows still leaving plenty of bullet in the neck.

Hope this helps. If not there is info on www.6mmbr.com in regards to bullets and suggested leade length if you do a few searches.

I think the biggest thing is to chamber your gun for bullets that are readily available. It is a pain at times to get the many aftermarket made bullets from the US.

This is what is the load my buddy in Australia is using and guess it is what everone is using down under in F-Class.

30.0 grn of Varget with a CCI 450 (small rifle mag.) .030 jump on a 107grn Sierra. It is very consistant and a winner.

It sounds like the plumber is setting the throat up for you to match what you already (or plan to...) use in 6BR.

If you aren't currently using 6BR, you can match your seating depth to the throat rather than the other way around. cycbb486 has good advice... I seat mine (105 Amax) into the lands with no jump. As your throat wears, you will tend to seat longer, so better not to start with a really long seating depth.

6 Br and 8 twist barrel

Hi there, if you are shooting at 300Meters the 8 twist is a bit fast. The 8 twist is usually used for long range ie 1000Meters. however if you now have the 8 twist and you want to shoot 80 to 107 gr then seat the 80gr down to the shoulder neck junction and use that for a start on throating. It should give you long service. Take care and good shooting, Bill.

Okay I came up with 2.330" with the 105 amax. This puts the base of the bullet below the case neck yet the .243 dia. of bullet is above the neck shoulder junction. Will I loose anything by having the base below case neck(other than powder capacity) THANKS.

Calvin has pretty much summed it up. Only thing is the boattail does not have a pressure ring.

It has been trying bringing in custom bullets but we has both Lapua and Berger customs VLDs in stock.

Regards,

Joe
