6mm PPC factory ammunition

Is it a custom target 6ppc ? If so factory 6ppc ammo may not work for you. Most I know that have a 6ppc make their brass from .220 Russian Lapua brass.

It is an European single shot hunting rifle so I was thinking of starting with factory ammunition and then developping a load for it.

Sako makes it. I last bought it Accuracy plus but it appears they are out of stock. Call them, they are good Sako ammo dealers.

Factory sport 6mm ppc rifles will follow Sami specs. Custom bench rest rifles vary mostly in neck diameter. You can use 220 Russian brass or 6.5 Grendel brass and make 6mm ppc standard factory loads. LEE Wilson and other companies have dies for this factory load. The main difference from custom and factory are the tolerances. The main powder types are N133, LT 30, LT32 for best results. Due to the 1 in 14 twist rate you will have shoot 45gr - 70gr bullets. Most benchrest shooters are around 65gr.

I've had one of the SAKO single shot heavy barrel, so called "Benchrest" rifles chambered in 6PPC USA for the past 20+/- years.
Got the rifle, T36 scope, Redding dies, 500+ pieces of SAKO brass, and a few thousand bullets as a consignment sale.

Shortly after that, I also sourced 100 Lapua 220 Russian, and fire formed it and neck turned it for a very close fit to my chamber.
The lot of brass I received had to be neck turned to fit, and I exclusively shoot it.

So, I have 500+ pieces of SAKO brass that has been weight sorted by the previous owner - 400 of which still have bright primer pockets, but dark interiors - possibly only fired once?

I might be convinced to part with some, but 220 Russian is currently about 2$ a piece, and that's before the COW fire forming, neck turning, and second firing to fully blow out the shoulder...

About the only factory ammo that was available that Im aware of for the 6mm ppc was Sako branded factory ammo. I bought a Sako heavy barrel single shot rifle years ago in 6ppc and also bought some of the factory ammo at the time. Im not even sure if it’s still available anymore. As mentioned above there are two neck thickness sizes, one for factory rifles and the thinner neck for benchrest. But I don’t think any factory ammo was ever available for the benchrest version anyway as pretty much all benchrest shooters hand load. So it’s more than likely if it’s a factory rifle it would take factory ammo if you can find it.

I didn't even know they MADE 6ppc factory ammo. Always seemed like a handloader cartridge given the people who tend to use them. Guess not.

I’m going to build a model 700 and shoot this stuff. The sako 20$ per box rebate made it cheap in 2020. But cheap is relative considering it’s been sitting on the shelf too long.

Even if one is loading for a 'no neck turn' chamber - often marketed as 6mm PPC - USA (or SAAMI spec), it makes sense to start with quality brass.

Lapua makes quality 7.62x39 brass, but if one is buying Lapua brass to fire form, they are better off to start with 220 Russian, as small primer pockets generally give better performance in 6PPC.
You can get cheaper 7.62x39 brass from PPU, Starline, etc., but then you are loading with large rifle primers, but then you are negating some of what the 6PPC has to offer, imho.

Easiest method is to buy factory 6PPC ammo - if you can find it. As mentioned both Norma and SAKO made factory ammunition.

Norma still lists 6ppc - USA brass.
SAKO used to sell 6PPC - USA brass as well, but I don't think they do anymore, so if you are going to find it, it will be through a gun show, the EE or on consignment with your local gun store.
