Hi there,

For those in the know, where would one start with 95 gr pills or heavier with a 1/9 twist for this caliber? The gun may be 1/9.125 but I will need to confirm...old M788.

I have IMR and H4350 and IMR4831 on hand. In general will flat base be better than boat-tail and can I go 105gr confidently with this twist. I want to use this for long range varmint and whitetail deer backup rifle. Was leaning towards a Sierra product but will try anything including the Berger hunting. The only bullet I will opt out on is Nosler Partition as my .270 is rigged for these.

"......old M788..." Dandy rifles they are too. That .125 isn't going to make any difference. Most commercial hunting rifles in either 6mm Rem or .243 are rifled for deer bullets.
"...can I go 105gr confidently..." Yep. Been using 'em for eons in my .243. IMR4350. Does friggin' astounding things to a ground hog.
I'd like to give those 115's from Barnes a try myself.
Flat based or BT's won't make much difference for hunting either.

Shooting a model 700 heavy barrel 80s vintage it likes the heavier bullets. 100 gr. hornady sps . I like the sound of the 105s or the 115s just may give them a go. imr 4350, 4831. Found 4064 marginally better with the lighter bullets 58gr v-max and 80gr hps.

I have had extensive experience with the 6mm Remington, particularly in Remington firearms.

As a matter of fact, Leeper is building me a HB as we speak, Benchmark 1-8", Rem 700 action in a varmint Laminate. [Can't wait!!]

Your 1-9¼" Remington factory twist will probably stabilize everything up to 105 Flat based bullets. I did not have any luck with the longer 105/107/108 VLD types
in several factory Remington barrels. The 115's will not work, period. However, the Sierra hunting 100 grain Boattail works well.

You will find IMR 4831 works fine, but Reloder 22, and IMR 7828 seemed better in my rifles for bullets over 95 grains.
Even H 1000 works well in large doses. IMR or H 4350 is great for bullets up to 100 grains, but not so good for the true heavies.

The 6mm is a fine chambering, and IMHO is just enough better than the 243 to be worth working with. [I have both chamberings, lol]
I do shoot my tight twist 6mms at 1000 yards every spring, and they always do well.

Enjoy that 788 Remington! Regards, Dave.

I like the 100gr bonded bullets from Matrix. Marshall is top notch and his bullets are great. I use a max load of H4350 with 100gr pills but I have a 1:8 twist on my 6mm rem.

I'd get my hands on some 105 hornady's either the amax or bthp version. They are fairly cheap and shoot well. The 95gr Berger VLD is ok but the results on critters left me looking for more terminal performance.

Nice to see a resurrected thread! I settled on 100 grain Sierra ProHunters as the local shop didn't have the Gamekings. I tried 2 powders that performed equally as well - H4350 and H4831SC. Settled on H4350 but would not hesitate to use H4831. If memory serves me correct, I otherwise would have a dime sized 5 shot group at 300yds but had one flyer. I also tend to remember the barrel grouping better after being fouled with at least 10 shots.

Based on a field test, I have about 7.5" drop at 300 yds with this bullet, so working backwards I think muzzle velocity is in the neighbourhood of 2950 fps. I picked-up a box of 105 grain A-max but I can't get them into the detachable mag on the M788. I plan on some quality time this spring with the 6mm - have another now loaded and shooting spectacular with 65gr V-max. See 200 yd 3 shot group below (and 65 gr Vmax performance):
