Getting the itch to build another precision rig and settled on the 6mm.
I was thinking 243 win would be perfect, accurate high velocity, easy to get brass etc. Then i thought about barrel life, or lack there of. I was then thinking well maybe 6mmbr, good barrel life, uber accurate and easy to load for(my kind of cartridge), but i do feel the need for some speed. So i settled on the 6x47 lapua also called the 6-6.5x47. It is a very effecient. You get roughly 200fps more velocity than the 6mmbr which would be good for slinging even the 115gr bullets out to and past 1000 yards.

For bullet i am thinking the 105 gr Hornady BTHP would be pretty good at .530bc.
probably a savage with accutrigger in 308 for my build platform.
thinking of another 6-24x50 4200T for my optics
26" barrel. contour somewhere between a magnum sporter and medium weight varmint. not sure which barrel maker yet but if the dealers want to shoot me a price on a savage prefit i would be ok with that;)
my hang up is the 6.5x47 brass to neck down it's pretty expensive and hard to find. I think 50 pieces of brass would be lots if anyone knows where to find it.
powder, primers? i dunno i got lots of h4831?

So who has a 6x47 lapua that can give me some pointers and insight into my new obsession?

6 by 47

I just decided I will get a 6.5 barrel, for a 6.5 by 47 and use 130 bergers or lapua bullets, maybe think on this as well, then you do not have to neck the 6.5 by 47 down and you get to push larger bullets with maybe a better ballistic coefficient

just my thoughts

I had one built about a year ago. I had a good chat with Dave Kiff at PTG about this cartridge. It was his opinion that some guys couldn't get them to shoot because the angle into the lands was too steep. Anyway, I ordered a reamer from him and long story short is it is incredibly accurate. It was very very easy to tune. I only fired 3 groups with it at 500 yards last year but the very first was 5 shots into 7/8 of an inch. The next 2 weren't as good as the bag moved and I didn't realize it( they were approx 2 inches).
The chamber is a 0.269 neck with a 0.123 free bore.
I am using H4350 and Berger 108 BT .

Ya, I don't know. I think the 6mm will shoot flater with less wind drift and similar knock down power at 1000yards. The 6.5 bullets really shine if you can shoot them as fast as the lighter high bc 6s

Likely the most popular use of that Lapua case. It does work and I see no reason why it wouldn't shoot superbly. I am not a fan of the SR primer in a case that big especially when things get cold BUT there are no shortage of shooters have ZERO problem.

Or maybe that is part of the reason some cant get accuracy?????

No matter, there have been dozens of wildcats base on this and similar case volumes from the 70's till now. No mystery here. I think H4831SC could be a nice match with the heavies but a LR primer would be my choice for this powder.

Another out of the box option is the 6XC. No forming and a solid history.

Hrn is going to neck down their Creedmore for some 6mm fun.

So there is plenty of company in this case volume from factory offerings.

If you want cheap and easily accessible brass, grab some 22-250 and fly at it.

Personally, if I were building a 6mm zapper for tactical matches, the main goal for me is flat trajectory. Here a larger case would be an asset AND if going Savage, you have a large factory mag. If going AI or M14 type mag, then the shorter hull is good.

There is lots of info out there on these wildcats and factory offerings. They all work. Some will fit different rigs and end uses better then others but are all fun to play with.

If you plan on using Lapua brass, consider outside neck turning before necking down. Stuff is thick and usually hard. Annealing will be your friend

Shoot me a PM if you want quotes on prefit barrels and discuss cost of parts and dies. Some of these cost a small fortune for support gear.

Sounds like a fun project.

From what I have been hearing from guys who have built 6x47 lapua's they work better with lighter bullets ,when you go to a heavier bullet and slower powder they are getting inconsistent ignition due to the small primer.

A 6mm SLR is a great choice also and based on 243 brass.
