7-08 AI

Maybe this as the rifle is already a donor 284 Win !

I looked at them - 7 SAW - 7-08 AI for a 7mm short action build. and it would
have been a toss up, Instead I wild catted a 284 Winchester
by shortening it to near a 308 length. It gives me a much
larger boiler room, and combined with a longer throat. I can
push a 183 SMK to 2820, but the accuracy load is 2770. It's
my SA284  lol

Try an extended mag box and throating your rifle to accommodate the extra coal that gives you. 280 ballistics handily. - dan

A friend has a Tikka 7mm08 that he “Improved “ by changing the bolt stop and magazine to the long action version to accommodate the long throat. I’ve seen his chronograph readings and targets, he’s very close to a 280AI with a case full of 6.5 Staball and 162gr ELD-X. Accurate and fast, what’s not to like!

I do. Built on a Rem 600. Barrel is 21 inches if I remember correctly. It's about 100 fps faster than my 7mm-08 788, 18 inch barrel. Depending on the bullet weight, it gets pretty close to the same speeds as my 26 inch barreled 700 VLS. - dan
Kinda seems like it didn't add much to the calculus...3 more inches of barrel for 100 FPS. Probably could have gotten there with the 18 incher even with the short barrel, and almost definitely would have gotten there if you changed the barrel on the 788.

All kinds of options. Still, it does what it was supposed to do. - dan
