Well, some rifle manufacturers do this, and have a bolt stop to limit travel.

I built my 7mm 08 on a long action 700 so I could use a Kwik-Klip conversion for hunting... it works fine...

Years ago I ran into a guy at the range with a long action Rem 700 with a factory 22-250 barrel in it...said he had two 700's in 30-06 and a friend tore apart a 22-250 so he had the 'smith put the barrel in one of his '06 actions.Apparently it worked fine.

The US M24(or is it the M40?...I'm not up on all the military models) sniper rifle is built on a long action Rem 700 in 308 Winchester.

The only drawback to using a long action is the rigidity of the action. It is not a "problem" per se. If you are rich and famous, you might consider sleeving the long action, otherwise just leave it.
