I have a new long action build in progress and was hitting writers block on what 7mm caliber I should run on a 2nd barrel. .535” bolt face.

I was thinking ah just do another 7 WSM or 7 SAUM but I was looking for a bit more FPS and decided to make use of the long action with a long case.

7 RUM, 28 Nosler were too much of a good thing if I want to shoot steel frequently.

7 Rem Mag doesn’t gain much over the short action calibers.

7-300 Win Mag. I know it’s old hat to some on here but it’s a new discovery for me.

The reamer is ordered. Barrel is purchased.
Anyone on here shoot a 7-300 Win Mag?

I’ve got one that I used for culling in New Zealand and a fair bit closer to home. The rifle is a Corlane built custom Sako 75 with mcMillan Sako Hunter stock and 26” 1-8 Hart barrel. I use the 180 Berger VLD mostly. It will shoot the exact same chart as an STW I have that needs 2” more barrel and 5 more grains of the same powder to do the same thing.

Its a great cartridge in a 3.600” or longer mag box, because I can reach the lands with any sane bullet choice and chase them for awhile if warranted.

Great fun with a slope full of goats and a can. ;)

That post just reaffirmed I made the right choice.
Craige Douglas has your 7-300 Win Mag reamer I do believe?

7mm Mashburn or a 7mm STW is what I think you should look at.

I don’t want to fireform or mess with shoulders. So 7 Mashburn and 7 Practical don’t work.
7 STW the cartridge gets a bit long if one decides to load a Berger 195.

Straight forward neck down with 300 Win Mag bushing die.
ADG makes 300 Win Mag brass.

3% more velocity than a 7mm Rem Mag

Nope there’s more there than that if that’s the goal. Could get to the next node safely that the 7 Rem Mag probably can’t. Exactly where I’d like to be with the 7-300 Win Mag.

Could have just went 28 Nosler if one were after velocity.

Well, apples to apples it's 3% more than a 7mm Rem Mag, and 2% less than a 28 Nosler

We're talking cartridges with case capacities of 85, 93, and 99 grains h2O

For every 1% increase in capacity, you'll see 0.25% increase in velocity

Yes, similar to if you were to compare 22 Creedmoor to 220 Swift, 22-250 Rem, 22-250AI, and 243 variants. All apples to apples. Some are just easier to prep and load than others.

It's just something different and neat. If a person already has 300 Win Mag bushing dies this is an easy one to do. If so inclined.
Nothing more really.

Keeping the addiction going in the face of everything that is 2020. LOL

I like the 7mm-300wm, almost went that route years ago but decided on the 7saum

With an 8 twist, the 7-300 is a good choice
