I'm getting consistent 3" groups at 40 yards with iron sights on a rest with American eagle 62gr .223. Is this considered good, bad, or average? The trigger is a dlask single stage. It's a long, stiff pull at about 9lbs. Anything I can do to get the groups tighter? Or is it not realy possible? Thnx!

My 6.5 inch upper would do under 2 inches at 100 yards with good ammo and a 2-7 Burris scope.
Short doesn't effect accuracy negatively, it only sacrifices muzzle velocity which makes you compensate more when shooting longer distances.
Unless you like headaches I strongly suggest a linear comp instead of a brake. You may be ok with a 5 prong but with a barrel that short it's best to push that concussion blast downrange as much as possible.

Sorry I didn't take pics at the range.

Try different ammo and maybe have a smith knock that trigger down to 5-6 pounds. It's not a target rifle so don't go too low. I personally prefer a two stage in my AR's but as long as you are comfortable with it you should be fine.

Since you are in Edmonton you are in luck, go to Tier One Armoury and grab some of their Black Hills Match ammo, that's the stuff I was using when mine printed under two inches at 100yds. They also have some really nice triggers for very good prices if you want to try something else.

With a decent optic, decent barrel and decent ammo it should be around the 1 to 2" range. As has been stated above the barrel length has little to do with accuracy, more to do with velocity. Nice looking rig!
