9's work best for skeet - 8's for Trap back to the 22 yard line, 7-1/2's from there to the back fence. Generally shoot 8's at Sporting & 5-Stand, but have a bunch of 7-1/2's in the bag for longish rabbits ( very durable targets - you can pick up "unbroken" targets with three & 4 holes right through them that didn't do the trick ! ) and the occasional 40+ yarders. Yes, 8's will break them out further, but not consistantly IMHO. If your stuck for just one size, 8's will cover 90 percent of your clay target needs, and make great field loads in 1 oz. for grouse & woodcock too.
