7.5x55 Swiss Questions

I have the rifle, and I have the dies. I also have some questions!

Firstly, I have conflicting data on bullet diameter. Some indicates .304" bullets, other information (from Lee) indicates standard .30 calibre .3085" bullets will work.

I don't want to chance it - which is it? All of my loading manuals tell me absolutely nothing. I have never seen 7.5mm component bullets for sale.

Secondly, has anyone ever loaded this round? Powder? Can you form cases out of .30-06 brass (which I hear you can but remain doubtful due to diameter)?

Any info is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

You want to use Winchester .284 brass if you can't find any 7.5x55. BCRedneck supposedly has 7.5x55 Grafs in stock. I use .284 brass, FL size and that's it, it's ready to go, doesn't even need trimming for the first firing. .308 bullets is what you use. Need to watch OAL as the throats are very short on swiss rifles.

First off, here's a couple of sites that are good reading.

http://www.swissrifles.com
http://swissriflewebsite.com

The 1893 Carbine and the 1889 rifle had 0.304" bores. Rifles from the 96/11 and on had 0.308" bores.

There are several people here reloading this round. If you can't find a supply of 7.5x55mm brass, resize .284 brass. The base is smaller and the case ends up being a couple thou short, but it will work just fine.

Lots of powder choices. Pretty much any med/slow powder is good.
Like Hitzy said, throat lengths are short. Seating depth from the manuals are waaayyy too long.

Anything else?

Slug the bore to make sure of the diameter. From what I've read, the swiss rebarreled a ton of the older rifles. If it is 0.308", use reduced loads.
If it's 0.304".....cast your own?
