Just picked up a K31 a few weeks ago. Have found ammo availability to be almost non existent. SOOO... how about some hand loads.
Any one have some favorite recipes they would like to share?
I understand that the chamber of the K31 is a bit different than earlier rifles. Where would I find appropriate reloading dies?
 
I use winchester .284 brass and Lee dies. I full length size the brass with a good bit of lube and a dab in the mouth. It generally won't need a trim as it's pretty much the right length once resized. I neck size after firing with the Lee collet die and haven't had any problems with chambering after 6 loadings. I don't load screamers but 150g FMJ's at 2700fps....accurate and easy on the brass.
.284 is slightly smaller at the rim but does not give any extraction problems.

On the left is a factory GP11 round, right my neck sized reload. The pre-fired brass is considerably smaller then the chamber as you can see.

I use a number of ways to have 7.5 Swiss. 1-Military ammo when available,2- converting .284 brass,3- purchasing 7.5 brass off E-Bay,4- Reloading the berdan primed military. I use RCBS and Lee FL dies and use a carbide 308 button for sizing the brass necks but make sure the necks are well lubed on the inside anyway as I don't want to stretch the brass after sizing and have trouble closing the bolt. Berdan primers were /are available from North Silva in TO. Decapper for berdan is available from Wholesale Sports. Loadings obtained from Swiss Rifles.com or the Sierra 50th Anniversary Manual. Check out your local Swiss Rifle Club....

You may be able to buy some brass from your local Swiss Rifle Club. The ammo comes direct from Switzerland and most casing only have ever been fired once.

Some of the club members also reload and most shoot the older carbines, they could probably give you a few tips.

Graf produces 7.5 Swiss brass. Lee, RCBS, Hornady have dies available. Bullets - Sierra Match King - .308(168 gr) are popular for the reload. It is true that the chamber of K31 is a bit different because the rifling lands begin almost immediately in front of the chamber mouth. The OAL needs to be keep exact to provide good accurccy and prevent over pressure.
40.5gr of IMR-4064 w/168 gr .308 Sierra Match King will give a very good accurrcy, the kick is not punishing. I keep the OAL in 2.885".
 
I've tried up to the 178gr Hornady A-max with 45gr Varget in Privi brass.
OAL at 2.905"
More pleasant to shoot with 44 or 44.5 gr of Varget

Will try 155gr and 168gr Bergers next.
