7.62×51 in Precision Rifle

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering about everyone's thoughts on running 7.62x51 in a precision rifle. I know running 556 in a 223 is questionable due to pressure differences, but how do you personally feel about running brass cased 7.62x51 in your fancy 308 rig? Any experience with how it performs, or if there are any issues with running it?

Thanks,
Cal.

Commercial .308 runs higher pressure than nato ball so it's fine (opposite situation of 556/223). Just don't use that norc crap, I only put actual nato ball through mine, it does 3/4" to 1" with de linked M80.

I know running 556 in a 223 is questionable due to pressure differences, but how do you personally feel about running brass cased 7.62x54 in your fancy 308 rig? Any experience with how it performs, or if there are any issues with running it?

I assume you meant 7.62x51. check this link out http://www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html and see section ".308 Win vs. 7.62x51--The Straight Scoop" about 3/4 of the way down the page, should give you some good info

I have been using IVI 75 7.62x51 in my Remington 700 Varmint Synthetic for 20+ years with no ill effects. When I had my Colt Sporter Match H-Bar I used IVI 86 5.56 all the time with no problems.
Remember, the DCRA guys shot IVI 7.62 in their fancy long range rigs long before anybody thought much about the difference between 7.62 and .308. Never heard of anybody having any issues.
IVI ammo is up there with the cream of the crop I believe though.

Yes thanks, I've corrected the OP. Thanks for the link. Any thoughts on running steel cased, or non-brass cased ammo through a precision rig?

Thanks,
Cal.

Since no one has mentioned it yet I'll do it (and as stated 7.62 NATO Ball will be fine). The results may not be too spectacular. I would hope your planning on doing some reloading for your Precision Rifle. If you want to get the most from your rifle you are pretty much committed to reloading.

Regarding Steel cased stuff I've seen some complaints from AR owners regarding Copper washed Chinese 7.62X39. What I get from that is it depends on who made it. I'm assuming it's a bolt rifle and I doubt it will cause any problems. I can't comment on how a tight chamber will perform with steel cases though. Bottom line Ball through a Precision Rifle may be fine for plinking but it defeats the purpose to some degree.

I shoot 5.56 Ball through my .223 all the time. The whole .223/5.56 stuff is way over blown, the chambers are slightly different and the testing standards are different. I would assume the whole controversy relates to older rifles being throated for light bullets in a slower twist barrel, resulting in what amounts to a bullet jammed in the lands with a max load...not a real good idea without working up to it. To suggest 5.56 Ball is dangerous in a new bolt rifle is pretty silly. Not only is the action mostly likely stronger but so is the brass.

i agree with redshooter. Nothing wrong with it , but why.

And more importantly, imo, if you have a "precision" rifle, why would you use plain 762? 90% will probably be milsurp ball ammo. You would be getting meh results with it, unless its just for barrel break in, if you choose to do that. Unless you happen to get some of the M118 "sniper" ammo, use match grade ammo and see what your rifle is capable of.

IVI is crap. Trying to fit 2 1/2 + MOA ammo into a 2 MOA bull was more good luck than good shooting. Glad we are not stuck with issued IVI ammo for competitions anymore. That being said, why would you want to shoot military ball ammo out of a precision rig. Kind of like running a Lamborghini on 87 octane fuel.

As maynard said... why would you want to?

If you have a true precision rig, you spent some coin to get quality components assembled. Why feed it junk?

With proper handloads, 1/2 min LR would be expected... why shoot 2moa ammo?

You would be better off just using a factory rifle and pocketed the change.
