With the better variety of 7.62/308 semi auto available in Canada now, especially with the arrival of the NEA102, I think it is time for us to put the 308 rifles back to their own categories like many American forums have always done.

We have changed the description of the Main Battle Rifles away from the implicit M14 focus, which was really a by product of the fact that M14 was pretty much the only NR game in the last 15 years. Whether we call it MBR, or the new name by the US army aka "Interim combat rifle" or whatever, 308 semi auto is always a class of its own.

From a "military weapon discussion" standpoint, it makes sense to separate the SMG/PDW/Assault rifle from the SASS/MBR platform when it comes to that kind of discussion. From the hunting and competition usage perspective, .223 rifles definitely have very different usage from the full power 30 cal semi auto.

Down the road, we will sticky any FAQ to the forum based on the calibre of the rifle. 223/556 will stay at B&G, 308 and up will head to the MBR. If it is a multi-cal, the 223 version will go to B&G and the 308 version will go to MBR ( The only true one receiver fits all multi-cal system is the lower of the Colt CM901) This is probably the simplest "dividing line" for people to locate the most relevant category to ask questions

Thinking about it myself, it seems that we should group firearms based on type/lineage rather than based upon caliber. I mean how many M14 guys are going to be reading about these rifles (NEA 102, ATRS Modern Hunter, etc ), and how many black rifle guys are going to be reading about these rifles?

Just my .02c

I do understand what you are saying but then G3, M14, SIG 54X and FN are all considered MBR purely because they are from that generation...... but AR10 is actually just as old as M14 and CETME.

So technically by linkage NEA102 as an AR10 variant is more MBR than anything like the ATRS, SCAR17, etc. And also B&G forum already has a truck load of stickies on 5.56 rifles, there are more spaces in the MBR forum for 7.62 rifles stickies once the M14 threads are tidied up into its own subform.

At the end of the day, It is probably easier to draw a line by the size of the cartridge. Everyone knows and haw traditionally drawn the line line by using 5.56 and 7.62 as the boundary. Big boys over 200lb go right, smaller dudes under 200 lb go left. Easy enough

I used to love pouring over the old Norinco M14 picture threads and such over on the battle rifles section until that sticky mysteriously disappeared ..... I think I bought four or five M14's due to those stickies.

Fair enough. The black rifles forum is pretty gummed up as it is so it makes sense.

That is an intermediate caliber and would fit the definition of an assault rifle caliber. Just IMHO.
I agree, just stirring up #### because he mentioned .30. Hmm, more similar to 7.62x39mm. Better put them in Red rifles to be safe!:d

So where does .300 Blackout/Whisper fall? It's a .30 cal.:yingyang:

But they can be stuck inside a 5.56 mag - 300 BLK is really a "special weapon". Hate to bring up a term from the 80's and 90's.

I think one of the better ways to describe where a particular caliber lands is what the parrent case is. That way you dont have issues of caliber changes altering a rifle's categorization... makes sense inside my hollow head. Haha

IMO, you should replace the Black and Green Rifles forum with two new forums: the first specifically for the AR-15 (as that's what 50%+ of all posts in Black and Green Riles are about) and the second for all other types of contemporary "military style" riles regardless of caliber.
