has anybody try to fire 7.62 /39 in a 308 rifle?? with an chamber adapter from MCA SPORTS.
i have a few thousands of 7.62 by 39 ammo. collecting dust, may be a good way to get more trigger time.
question? will it damage my remg.700
is it safe ? and what is accuracy??
wellcome all input
thx

Actually I think it might not work so bad if the adapter was decent quality.

Early Mini 30 barrels were .308 bore instead of .311, and yet 7.62 x 39 was shot through them with apparently no problems.

If you've got a bit of a worn bore, even better. There's more than one guy out there who purposely loads .311 bullets for his worn out .308 bore and gets good accuracy with it, instead of rebarreling.

If you're scared, send me the adapter, and I'll try it for you and send it back with results. Seriously.

As an addition, Ross rifles used .308/.300 grooves/bores for the .303, not the standard .311/.303 used in Lee's and others. And, I'm told, that Ross' Rifles shoot pretty damn well.

Don't forget, if your "few thousand rounds" of 7.62x39mm is actually old army surplus rounds:
-don't expect the greatest of groups. It won't be remotely close enough for discussion in the "Precision" sub-forum!

-it's likely corrosive, so you'll need to clean the bore, chamber and your fancy "MCA adapter" before you go to sleep that same day.

But neither's a huge deal, SKS owners have been experiencing that since they bought their rifles. Same with VZ58 owners, and maybe even a few Ruger Mini-30 owners. But generally I think people with nice rifles tend to shoot that old corrosive surplus through inexpensive SKS's and "easy to clean" VZ58's.

I wouldn't worry about the difference in bore size: bullets tend to get slightly "swaged" when they go down the barrel anyway. If the difference in size were greater than a few thou, then you'd have concerns about high pressures or leaked gas depending on the combo, but for that minor amount, no big deal normally.

Have a good read.

So far a case and a half of Czech surplus and re-modified the Sako extractor to an AR-15 extractor. Still going, no problems and still accurate.
This is also a full chambering, not an adapter.

thx lejarretnoir, very informative. interesting as well.
i do not have the adapter yet, thinking of buying one. my
guss is with the adapter, the throat would be too long.

man you gotta try everything. last week i pulled .22lr 37gr bullets and loaded them in .223 cases with 28.5 grs of BLC-2 and federal primer. 3500 FPS. everything worked fine. that was just function test. now im going for accuracy.

Experimenting aside wouldn't it be easier to sell or trade for 308s. Either should be easy in Van.

You will have a very long freebore throat with an adapter. Accuracy?
The other problem is extraction. You will be trying to extract a case head that is .443 from .473" boltface.

I've got a 308-bore 7.62x39. Works fine. But as already noted, the surplus ammo out there is crap. My gun is capable of fantastic accuracy with handloads, but 4-5" groups with surplus. Other than crappy accuracy, I haven't noted any other problems with the .311 surplus ammo; it doesn't appear to be generating high pressures, and it doesn't foul any better or worse than anything else. As it is corrosive, I make sure I thoroughly clean the barrel after use, and so haven't had any pitting or corrosion

i wouldn't trust a "chamber adapter", i wouldn't shoot surplus ammo in anything other then an sks/cz/vz, i wouldn't call it precise if i did...
