A student just brought in a empty case of ammo in...its marked 7,62 - 43 Was the ammo in the case 7,62x39? Seems odd, I thought I remember reading a thread on the subject but cant find it in the search.

Yes. Model 59 cartridge. For use in the UK-59 and SVD.

Russia still refers to the 7.62x54R as the Model 91 cartridge, dating it back to it's origins with the Mosin Nagant 1891
