7.62*51

Hello,
some one gave me some ammo saying it was 308 but it was marked 7.62X51 on Lapua brass. I know that 7.62 is military, and seems to be the right size, but can anyone confirm that it is 308? What is the difference between the different 7.62X??... Thanks in advance, folks.

7.62X51 or 7.62 NATO is .308

well, close enough anyway. NATO sets the specs for 7.62x51, and SAAMI specs the 308, so they're not, strictly speaking, identical. For all practical purposes, they're usually interchangable. If you're using .308 load data, reduce charges by a grain or two, because NATO brass is usually thicker.
