I just found a very nice 7.62 K98 with a manufacturer's code of "bou" or "dou" 43. Could some of you Mauser experts out there tell me which factory made this rifle in 1943? I've wanted one for a while and did not want to repeat my earlier acquisition and sale of a K98 in 8mm, due to the difficulty in finding ammo. This rifle has a great bore and matching bolt and receiver, and a test firing shows virtually no case expansion, although I'll still check the headspace. The other parts are milled but mismatched. Also, does anyone know of a good source for a regulation sling in good condition?

Hi congrats on your k98 rifle. This rifle was originally manufacured for the German Wehrmacht (armed forces) in 1943. The code "dou" represents waffen werke Brunn ag Bystrica in Slovakia. Head office was in Brno, but this manufacturing plant was in Bystrica, Slovakia. It is one of my favorite rifles, I have a 1944 dated all matching example, and love the rough late war finish. Being 7.62, it is obviously a postwar rework, so stamped parts would be correct, but were commonly mixmatched with milled parts by the country that aquired them after '45. ALthough in '43 it was still possible I suppose to be utilizing milled parts. Take care,
Joe

It is made in the city of Bystrica of former Czechoslovakia. Under the supervision of BR"UNN AG or Brno, present day CZ company. The {dou} is German code for the factory. And yes the 43 is the year of manufacture. What do you mean by "regulation" sling

By "regulation sling" I mean the standard Wehrmacht-type leather sling which fitted on the left side of the stock through the front barrel-band vertical slot and the vertical slot in the butt end of the stock. These used to be available as originals, but I see Marstar has repros available as well. I like to use a hasty sling when shooting, and this type worked well on my previous foolishly-sold k98, which was a mint Steyr 1940.
