I have an Israeli Mauser and I couldn't recommend them more if you want a cheap Mauser to shoot. The quality is just as good as a K98 in 8mm as they are German made (or Czech if it is a Brno), and usually only have the stock changed post war to a beech one.
Accuracy wise, there isn't much difference between 8mm and 7.62, all things being equal.
The key when looking for one is condition. Some Israeli Mausers were really used and abused so they can be real, beat up and shot out. I found one in the exchange forum with a great bore but a beat up beech stock. Changed the stock to a German laminate and it is a great shooter. Just as good as any of my 8mm Mausers.
Hard to say if 8mm surplus comes on the market what the price will be. What is known is that 7.62 will be available long after 8mm has dried up in the market as it is still used by military's in the world.
Buy one! (I think Milarm has one right now, be sure to check it out in person though)
