i have heard of k98's being converted to 7.62 nato by israel and was wondering what they are like. is the quality as good as a k98 in 8mm mauser and how acurate are they in 7.62? if there ever comes to be surplus 8mm would 7.62 ammo still be cheper or equally the same?

thanks

I have an Israeli Mauser and I couldn't recommend them more if you want a cheap Mauser to shoot. The quality is just as good as a K98 in 8mm as they are German made (or Czech if it is a Brno), and usually only have the stock changed post war to a beech one.
Accuracy wise, there isn't much difference between 8mm and 7.62, all things being equal.

The key when looking for one is condition. Some Israeli Mausers were really used and abused so they can be real, beat up and shot out. I found one in the exchange forum with a great bore but a beat up beech stock. Changed the stock to a German laminate and it is a great shooter. Just as good as any of my 8mm Mausers.

Hard to say if 8mm surplus comes on the market what the price will be. What is known is that 7.62 will be available long after 8mm has dried up in the market as it is still used by military's in the world.

Buy one! (I think Milarm has one right now, be sure to check it out in person though)

My Israeli Mauser may be the most accurate rifle I've got. With open sights it regularly shoots around one inch groups. Can't imagine what it would do with a scope.
Fun to shoot, easy to handload for, and cheap ammo around for shooting the steel gong.

I have a 'converted' K98 in 7.62/308...They dont show much love when they remove the old german markings but they are still obviosly a German made
K98, with IVI 7. :) 62 Im around 2 inches at a 100 metres, not bad for 200.00 :)

My Israeli K98 looks weathered on the outside but has a fantastic bore. It grouped 3-4" with the sole group that I've fired from prone at 100m, though I am sure that the rifle could do much better had I not been shooting poorly that day. All and all a nice deal for $121.00. :D
