M118 LR = 175gr seirra HPBT
replaced M852 and M118 special ball
US attempt to keep .308 win supersonic past 1000yrds out of a 24" barrel.
good stuff. should be head stamped- nato cross, LC,LR
hope this helps

"...Would love to get some for my rifle..." Reloading will do that. Hornady makes a 178 grain A-Max. Sierra makes a 175 grain MatchKing. I'd use IMR4064.

Here ya go Satain;)

I actually prefer to use this ammo for distance shooting my Israeli mausers rather than my battle rifles:eek:
I have two that are in condition 1 and this ammo groups MOA@100m with both of them.
This stuff is amazing, its gonna suck when it eventually runs out.

The only pic I have of a 5 shot grouping is the one shown. Distance 320 meters, shot prone from the dirt no rest. The other two holes near the neck were attempted headshots. Go easy here fellas, I'm using a 98k with the mauser iron sights.

I will try a few rounds of M118 in my M14 next time. I'm sure the group would shrink considerably given the M14's superior sights.

"M118", as pictured in post #4, was loaded with a military bullet - a 173 FMJBT.

"M118LR", which I think is what the ammo can on post #1 contains (both because it says "Long Range M118", and also because of the "07" year code) is its replacement. M118LR is loaded with a Sierra 175 HPBT, to nominally the same performance (2550 fps).

(FYI M852 is military ammo loaded with a Sierra 168 HPBT; so back in the days before M118LR, you had the choice of using M852 (very accurate bullet, good to 800 yards but falls apart at 1000 yards) or M118 ("arsenal-match" grade bullet, i.e. not nearly as good as a Sierra) that didn't shoot as accurately but very good aerodynamics, good for 1000y).

Yup, the lake city stuff I have is from 1972. Would be interesting to see how this ammo performs with a sniper rifle at 500m

J996 I would expect your '72 M118 to shoot about a minute to a minute and a half at 500m, like any other really good arsenal match ammunition fired out of a good rifle. Call it ten shot groups of 5" - 8" diameter.
