Somebody please clear this up for me........can you safely load, fire and eject 7.62 Tokarev ammo in a vintage 7.63 broomhandle pistol ......I have read that you can't.........but salesman in a gunstore says I can [ in a pinch ? ].......I am confused and I need a qualified opinion, before I buy the ammo........thanks folks

samcan. 7.62 Tokarev ammo is too powerful for the C96 7.63 Mauser. The Mauser bolt stop is one weak part and prone to failure.
The brass is interchangeable. Suggest you reload. Cheers. bogus

There is a lot of literature about it, most of it probably all quoting the same source. I think that "in a pinch" refers to a war time expedient, when captured ammo was all you had. No reason to do it today.

Wolf makes a spring kit that supposedly reduces the stress on the bolt stop. I installed the kit in my broomhandle only because the person I bought it from failed to inform me that all of the pertinent springs in the pistol were collapsed or broken. Likely from shooting Tok ammo.. Even with the new kit in the pistol I won't shoot the Tok ammo in it. One thing though, if you can find Tok ammo on strippers the strippers will fit nicely into your pistol for feeding the mag. One thing, you can pull the bullets from the Tok ammo and recharge with powder for a lower pressure load. Be careful with that though, most of the primers in Tok ammo are corrosive. You need to be careful with old Chinese or Portuguese offerings as well because of corrosive priming. I had some very nice Austrian surplus many yeas ago that was corrosive primed as well but it was bright and shiney and shot extremely well. Be careful with the old Kynoch offerings as well. Just about all of the older stuff is Berdan primed. Your are much further ahead picking up some Privi or Fiocci if you can find it.

This is not as easy a question as some make it out. Not all 7.62 Tokarev is loaded to the same pressure, neither is all 7.63 Mauser. If you look at enough published tests, you will see that there is significant overlap of the two flavors of the same cartridge. And FWIW, ALL 7.62 Tokarev ammo was loaded for use in both pistols and SMGs...there is no such thing as HOT SMG-ONLY Tokarev ammo. The problem stems from the sorry condition that many Mauser pistols reached this continent in from China. With that said, you should have a qualified 'smith look over your Mauser pistol to see if it is actually shootable, and replace all the springs. If it passes all the tests, it should actually be fine for almost any variety of Tokarev or Mauser ammo you find. Three exceptions to avoid are Czech M48, commercial S&B Tokarev, and Winchester Tokarev. All came out of the Czech S&B factory and are loaded exceptionally hot.

Personally I wouldn't risk the pistol and potentially your life over shooting some cheaper ammo. I have seen 5 or 6 threads (without searching) about people who have blown up/broken there broomhandle by using 7.62 Tokarev in there pistols.

Realistically your best bet is to reload or if that isn't a option for you, I would recommend modern production 7.63 Mauser.

I have heard that the Soviets were able to use 7.63 Mauser in there TT-33s and I would love to see someone do some tests to see how it functions (maybe one of these days if I ever get around to it).

Some people think it's the same. I bought 5 boxes of 7.63 on here 3 which ended up being the tok. . Guy said it's the same thing, made him buy those 3 boxes back. Lots of info if you google it. I wouldn't shoot it even with the spring kit
