Hi all,

I apologise if this has been addressed before. However......

From doing a little research, it appears that the standard military 7.62 x 39 bullet diameter is .310" (ie all the surplus stuff we buy for the SKS).
My Ruger Mini 30 apparently has a .308" diameter barrel - I believe it is also an older version rifle with the fold down rear peep sight (as found on the Mini 14 Ranch rifle).

I have several thousand rounds of the Norinco non-corrosive yellow box and silver box 7.62 x 39 ammo, which I am assuming is .310" caliber??

My question is: is it safe to shoot the .310" diameter ammo through my Ruger .308" barrel? I have had this Ruger for several months but have not been brave enough to shoot it, as I am unsure of the answer.

Thanks everyone,

Mike C

No prob bud. Now you've got some blasting to do. Let us know how she shoots and pics are welcome for sure ;). Mini30 is on my radar for sure but won't be getting one anytime soon.

I've got a Savage 10FCM in 7.62x39 and it's also got a. 308 bore. I haven't shot it much but it's an incredibly accurate rifle with milsurps ammo.

No issues whatsoever. The difference in size is so little it really doesn't make a difference. The only issue is, don't shoot out your barrel by letting it get too hot. Semi auto surplus blasting in non chrome lined. 308 bore will burn it out after a few thousand.

No problem. The Ruger has a nice long throat and handles the 310 just fine.

I have a 308 match barrel with a 7.62x39 chamber with a deeper throat to take the 155 match bullets. Does not show any pressure signs.

I've seen several people both warning /approving .308 barrels for the .303 British as well with a .311 or .312 bullet. Steve Rigwell seemed to think they would be safe ,allowing a wider selection of bullets . Some shot out Win 95's come to mind if you don't want a 30-40 Krag.Sorry to kinda run off topic but same idea............Harold
