Looks like I can't import 7.62 X 39 bullets. Due to the fact that the US State Dept sees it as a military bullet. So is there a bullet out there that will work in place of a 7.62 X 39 bullet?? Will a light weight .308 bullet work or a light weight 303 bullet??
I would like to be able to bring in something that will work for the guys that want to hunt with their Mini-30's or SKS's. A Soft Point or similar. Besides when all the surplus is gone, they will want to reload to save money.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
Regards, Henry

If the surplus ran out, I'd make a heavier load with more energy such as a 150-170 gr boat tail. The only reason I buy the 123grain SP brass is so I don't have to re sight the rifle away from how the surplus stuff shoots. In all honesty, I know I can make a better and heavier load than whats on the market in western Canada. As long as we do have surplus ammo, there is no point or savings. I do however keep my brass just in case

The Hornady 123 is an excellent bullet. Remington used to make a bulk style 123 grain (or so) softpoint that was good too. Haven't seen it around for awhile though.

so if you can't import 7.62x39, can you still import .310 or .311 ?

Mayby by not using the evil sounding "7.62x39" on the import documents, some paper pusher in the DOS won't know the difference.

Has anybody tried shooting cast .310 in an SKS ?

What about Privi Partizan? Can you get their bullets since they don't come from the States? The 123 gr. Hornady VMax bullets aren't fmj's and they are very accurate. Can you get them or the 123 gr. Hornady SP? They are really good choices in the 7.62 x 39.

The 7th Hornady reloading manual lists the following bullets as suitable for 7.62x39.

110 grain #23010 V-Max and #3010 Sp

123 grain #3142 V-Max, #3140 Sp and #3147 FMJ

130 grain #3020 Sp and #3021 Sp

150-155 grain #30309 Interbond, #30302 SSt, #3031 Sp, #3033 BTSP, #3037 BT-FMJ and #30312 A-Max

The 123 gr bullets are .310 diameter, all the others are .308 diameter.

All of these will load to a COL of 2.200, which is the standard for this caliber.

Getting the bullets is one thing, but finding affordable brass in this caliber is another thing. I would love to get some affordable brass in bulk. WC-735 would be good in this stuff.

My supplier is confused. The requirement for an export permit is for SKS rifles and rifle parts, not bullets. .308" bullets are the wrong diameter, except for a Mini-30.

Sunray, so I guess Hornady doesn't know what they are talking about.

I did some testing just recently, using .308 150 gr bullets in my XCR in 7.62x39. The rounds with .308 bullets grouped just as well, if not better, than the .310 123 gr bullets. You might want to think about what 7.62 really means...;)
