7.62 x 39 Hunting Bullet test

Interesting...

If you can, pick up a box of the Hornady SST ammo. I took my white tail this fall with an SKS and that ammo. The effect on target was... Stunning. The deer dropped into its own shadow. Not that expensive either, $35 for a box of 50 around here.

Are you sure that is for a box of 50? I pay that for a box of 100.

I found I couldn't get acceptable accuracy out of rifles with .310 bores with those. Good for you though for having an SKS that will. Surprisingly they shoot well in the No4 MkI* Long Branch I shoot.

Box of 50 rounds, not just the boolits. With my accurized (and by accurized, I mean I removed the bayonet, left the lug in place, and shimmed the action with some waxed baking sheets that I ironed and wedged in while still hot so it would form), and scoped (magwedge rail and a 1.2-6x Vomz scope) SKS, I can get 3-3.5" groups at 100 meters off the bench, which means if I'm paying attention, it's "Deer accurate" out to maybe 150 meters in the field, which is about 100 meters more than I need.

This year that was about 125 meters more than I needed, actually. I almost regretted taking off the bayo, I might have saved myself a cartridge.

Is Ganderite the YT video maker Peelreg?
If so, perhaps add a note that steel core is more common in Canada, as it is no longer importable into USA.
Consequently, lead core is far more common in USA.

Also, why use water jugs? A better test to duplicate flesh is wet newspapers. Certainly not as accurate as proper ballistic gel, but FREE!

I prefer shooting PVRI soft points or rounds nose in X39. Very accurate and good expandability. The problem is energy runs out fast for bullet expansion when further than 150 yards.

Handloads of 25gr /H4198 and Hornady's 123gr SP worked fine on two deer this fall.Neither bullet recovered broadside 30 + 100 yards respectively.Harold

It's too bad the HP bullet wasn't recovered I am curious as to their expansion.

It was the HP that prompted the test. The Internet gossip is that they don't expand well.

The fact that the bullet blew through two feet of water (whereas the other two did not) suggests little expansion.)

If I was planning on hunting, I would use a real hunting soft point bullet. I know it would expand reliably. At the end of the video you can see the expanded soft point complete with the jacket. The clipped bullet also expanded in water, which is a very hard medium.

I was surprised to see the old method of cutting the tip off a ball round for hunting.

That was a old method to create hunting ammunition.

The problem with the method was a some point the lead would be blown out of the bullet jacket and the jacket would be left in the barrel.
