So I was shooting the VZ58 today and saw that some ejected casings had their primers partially backed out. The firing pin hole wasn't cratered or anything. It's as if someone took a primer decapping tool and partially de-primed the case.
Anyone know what could be causing this? My guess is that maybe the ejection is too violent or maybe the headspace is off. I'm shooting Norinco 7.62 x 39

It can be headspace, excessive case head clearance of a combination of both. If the ammunition is made with the shoulder pushed back too far you have case head clearance. This is different than the headspace when referring to the rifle. Headspace is determined when the rifle is assembled. If you could just feel the bolt close on a steel go gauge you would have 0 head space.... but the military arms are quite sloppy... it may even close on a no go gauge and be acceptable with 6 thou head space. Combine that with a cartridge made with 4 thou clearance and now you have a condition where the primer may back up 10 thou.

Welp if it helps, it's one of those old CZH2003 chrome lined that Marstar brought in a few years ago. Fired crates and crates through it over the years with no problems until I just noticed it today. (brass usually flies too far anyways)

this is not exactly my photo but it looks similar to this.
