7.62 x 54R = .308 or .312

Hey all,
I just picked up a copy of Hornady's 7th edition reloading manual. I'd like to reload for my mosin, which clearly reads on the barrel 7.62x54R (naturally).
In the manual it gets slightly confusing, stating that I may need a .308 bullet, or I may need a .312 bullet, quote "The majority of guns coming into the country recently have groove diameters that range from .311" to .312"
It also states the 7.62x54R has a grooved diameter of .312", and 7.62x53R would be a grooved diameter or .308". It gives the info for both, so I'd just like to be sure that I'm not going to cause any issues if I put a .312 bullet down my barrel. The factory loaded ammo shoots very well, so next step is to measure those.
Does anyone out there reload for their 7.62x54Rs? What are you guys using? Any advice would be great!
 
I use the same bullet as in .303 british, either .311 or .312, depending on manufacturer.


From what I have heard, while there are some .308 bore mosin's out there, most of them are of the .311/.312 variety. And there are also apparently plenty of mosins out there with larger bores, even though they look in good shape (i.e - strong rifling etc, but bore actually .313 or larger).

What these guys said.

I have seen posted accuracy results from rifles with a .311 bore that shot a .308 diameter bullet horribly.

The accuracy improved dramatically when a proper .311 or .312 bullet was used.

IIRC, even a .310 diameter bullet wasn't the greatest for accuracy.
 
Some of the Finn MN are .308 some aren't...........The receiver should be marked with a "D" for safe with larger Soviet ammo...........Harold
