Besides the obvious Canadaammo.com, where do you guys get your 7.62x39 ammo and how much do you pay? what different types/makers are there? what milsurp ammo should i stay away from, and which is recommended?

Look around, I usually get mine at Things Military as they sell it in bulk as well as 7.62X54r in crates. Or Milarm or P&D in Edmonton. Sometimes Russel's has a deal on. Or where it's cheap and in crates

If you're like me and too broke to buy a lot right now you can get boxes of 20 (Norinco brand) at Russell's for $3.99/box...but if you have to get it shipped to you the shipping could cost you more than the ammo! (Loomis dangerous goods shipping) I haven't had time to shoot it yet so I dunno how good it is. Does anyone else know? I just got my sks-d (my first gun of my very own, yay!!) :) so actually I haven't shot any kind of ammo yet and am a clueless beginner. ;)

I agree you should get it in person if you can!

I use the Norinco ammo in my VZ-58S, and I'm quite happy with it. Seems every bit as accurate as the Czech, and I decided a while ago that the extra cleaning effort required with corrosive ammo like the Czech stuff wasn't worth it for me. I buy the Norinco 7.62x39 locally at my favourite gun store. I think it's $6-something a box there, though. I hope someone imports some more Norinco ammo so I can buy a crate or two.

I am kind of confused because I had read on sksboards that the Norinco ammo wasn't corrosive, and I commented that to the guy at Russells, and he said it *is* corrosive - that's why he is selling it so cheap. This is the description of it from Russell's catalogue:

"Norinco 7.62 x 39. Lead core - soft point - 20 rounds per box - 122 grains - non-corrosive steelcase - Berdan primed."

I thought it was primers that were corrosive or non-corrosive. I am not sure what non-corrosive steelcase means...like what people call the "brass" or cartridge or whatever? (Sorry if this sounds stupid but I am new at this!) Or the primer is covered in a steelcase? And do you know what Berdan primed means? Is mine corrosive, or was the guy at Russell's having a momentary brain fart? (He was super nice and helpful, no putdown intended there, they'll get my repeat business!)

At any rate, I am always going to clean my baby like it just fired the nastiest corrosove ammo just to be on the safe side! Because uhhhh it might have! ;) I am too clueless at this point to know...

Thank you SO SO MUCH to you and everyone who posts all this great info by the way!!

You'll get tired of that soon enough. Cleaning corrosive ammo is dead simple, do a search for it on the site, as it's been covered to death...

Thanks Ollie and Pontcanna. :) I hesitate to mention this after your kind help but I actually don't have any problem/question with diassembling/cleaning/reassembling my sks, and I really enjoy doing it. :) I didn't ask about cleaning as I got all that info from surplusrifle (see Pontcanna's excellent link above) and that is where I learned all that, and also there is great info on sksboards.com...there is GREAT info at those sites!!! I totally recommend them. Next up for me is putting in my new Ben Murray firing pin w/spring when it arrives. :) No problems anticipated there either!

But if anyone can answer the questions I *did* ask...which were about the Norinco ammo I have, that would rawk. ;) Sorry that I didn't make that clear? (I still dunno how people got that I was asking how to clean from what I said....hmmm I think I definitely need some writing lessons! Ha ha!)

Anyway, as I said, until I know more about this specific Norinco ammo, I am going to assume that it is nastyass corrosive and clean my baby accordingly just to be on the safe side (and I reallyreally enjoy doing that, but then maybe I am weird!) ;) I am just curious...no big deal if it doesn't get answered - I am just trying to learn more about ammo, primers, etc.. Thanks! :)

I fired 2 cases of the Norinco grey box ammo - it wasn't corrosive. I've heard the yellow boxed Norinco was a different matter.

I fire the Czech stuff through my Russian SKS all the time. Boiling hot water cleans it right up.

"Steel case" mean the cartridge case, usually brass, often steel.
The Norinco commercial stuff with lacquered cases are non-corrosive. I have yet to see any that is corrosive. The copperwashed miltary surplus from the 70's in spad cans is corrosive.
