the SVD uses the the 7.62x54R cartridge.

One fella at the range was telling me that he shoots in competitions where you have to "knock a steel target over" at ranges varying from 100 to 500 meters. He told me the 7.62 x 39 is one of the most popular cartridges because it "gets 'r' done", and because they have caliber restrictions in this competition.
